Timing food and liquids
Hi Everyone,
It seems every surgeon tells you something different. Now that I'm loading up on my protein through the new-whey vials I'm also trying to step up the liquids too and I'd rather hear from the supportive voices of experience here.
1) How long after drinking liquid do you eat? I've been told stop drinking 15 mins before eating and have been doing so.
2) How long after eating do you start to drink your liquids? I've been told an hour but I think that may be excessive.
I look forward to seeing what everyone says. Thanks in advance.
Kimberly

almost told the same thing
Mine said 15-30 minutes both ways. This is hard for me as i am a constant sipper. I hope someone has a good explanation for this. I thought it was to get the most out of the food nutrients and make it easiest on your pouch. I always loved that cup of joe after meals it was like it helped me digest my meal. I do sometimes take a drink after eating because i am still learning what full feels like.

My surgeon says to stop drinking 15 min. before eating and to not drink until 45 min after eating.
Mandy there are several different reasons for this. First if you drink with your meals or right after you will be pushing the food threw faster so that you will probably find that you get hungry sooner and are able to eat more food. The other reason is, if you drink with your meals you are also putting added pressure on that anastamosis...the connection between your pouch and small intestines. Over time that added pressure can stretch out that anastamosis. When that happens you no longer feel full, you eat more, weight loss stops and weight gain often occurs.

15 before & after
My doctor told me to drink water 15 minutes before I ate a meal so that the pouch wouldn't be dry. I wait 15 minutes after eating to slowly sip on water, per doctors advice. Works for me!

My husband, Bob, had this surgery 5 weeks ago. The reason his doctor told him to wait 30-60 minutes after eating to drink was to keep the nutrients in his body as long as possible. Since a small amount is going in, he wants the body to have time to absorb the nutrients. He said the same with stopping before you eat - you stop before you start eating so nothing is in there to make room for the food you are getting ready to eat.
He also told us it's good for everyone (even people who have not had the surgery) not to drink with their meals. He said people that drink with their meals are just washing the food right back out and within an hour or two they are hungry again, so they start snacking. It made sense to me. I'm one of those that drinks with my meals.
Have a good day. Debbie

I wait 15 minutes after drinking to eat, and an hour after eating to drink... my docs advice was 30 minutes before, but so many others was 15 that is what I adopted.. in the long run, I think its whatever works best for you..

Early out if I drank too soon after eating, I would puke or feel nauseated. So it was a good hour. Now that my pouch and I are on a first name basis, I know that food leaves my pouch in about an hour and 15 minutes, so I try to hold off on liquids as long as I can to keep the full feeling. I will have a sip or two of liquids right after I eat.
So I guess my answer is I wait at least 45 minutes, more if I can, depends on what I am doing. From everything I have read, its best to wait as long as you can.

Different doctor's rules on this subject amaze me. My doc is extremely conservative on everything but this! He has not guidelines for drinking before and says to wait 15 minutes after. This is what I've been doing and it works for me. Sometimes I may take a few sips with food if something is spicy or something, but I stick to the 15 minutes rule my doc gave me and that seems to work. If I drink any earlier, I know it! Once it was hot and I was really thirsty so I only waited about 10 minutes. Everything that I had just eaten and then some came right back up so I'm never going to do that again!
