Vitamins and Protein Powder
Hi everyone -
I would like to compile a list for myself of what vitamins I will need to take and also a list of different protein powders out there. I have a folder that I want to save everyones suggestions. If you have a link for protein powders or vitamins I would love to have it.
Thanks!

Here's what I've tried:
Optisource Vitamins - specifically formulated for post bariatric patients...it's what I take and they're chewable. They taste like baby aspirin.
The Vitamin Shoppe has the following:
New Whey Protein Vials
Multiple types of powders...I've tried Designer Whey, Protein Delite, EAS, Muscle Milk, Isopure, Metrx. I've not found one yet that I love, but I can choke them down because I know I need to get the protein in.
I've seen other folks on here use a website called Vitalady.
Hope this helps.
-Mike

Thanks Mike. I don't have a date yet. I'm in the waiting process and thought this would help me be proactive. I have to feel like I am doing something during this wait so why not start compiling a list of what I will need.

I spent that waiting period doing exactly what you are doing. I tried a bunch of different protein powders, and the New Whey vials, but my tastes changed after the surgery. (Everyone here said it would!) I can't stomach the New Whey vials right now, and I'm having trouble with the protein powders, except for the Muscle Milk, it tastes pretty good, but it's high in fat, so I'm only using 1/2 of a serving in 8 oz. of FF milk...that gives 24 grams of protein, which is a good head start for the day.
While I haven't used it, others on here have, but that Vitalady site lets you buy samples of stuff so that you're not committing to a whole tub of powder. Also, at the Vitamin Shoppe, there are some protein powders that are sold as samples and most of their protein fruit drinks and the vials are sold individually in a cooler inside the store. I tried the Isopure fruit drinks and didn't really care for them, but others on here swear by them.
Good luck...you're doing the right thing, and you're doing it in the right place!
Take care,
Mike

Welcome Kim!
When it comes to the vitamins and supplements, Centrum Chewables, B12 and Calcium Citrate were what was recommended by my nutritionalist. It's probably wise for you to consult with your doc. as to what s/he recommends before you buy anything though.
As for protein powders/drinks. I'm with Mike - I find it hard to stomach any of them now. I've got a cupboard full of opened tubs of the stuff!
I would recommend Vitalady for her samples but be warned, don't count on liking the same stuff after surgery. Here's the link: http://www.vitalady.com/

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I also take the Opticsource vitamins, they are chewable and really don't taste bad. I take 4/day.
As for protein powder, I did order samples from Vitalady, haven't really come across one I like.
Although I did buy the Body Fortress (i think that is the name) from Walmart. I have tried the chocolate and that wasn't bad, but now I am set on the vanilla. I usually put a scoop (23 grm) in my coffee of a morning and it tastse really good.
I have also ordered the New Whey Vials and the Profitca vials and the only ones I can take are the Proficta Berry vials. You can mix them with your liquid, I have mixed it with Crystal Light before and it doesn't taste too bad. It works for me, quick and easy, couple swallows and that is it.
Everyone is different, so don't go crazy, your taste really does change after surgery. There is so much out there to choose from. Good luck in your search.

Another excellent source for protein supplements is bariatriceating.com. They have all kinds of powders and ready-to-drink products plus things like protein chips and other protein-fortified snacks. I have bought several things off her sight and have been relatively happy. I bought the protein sampler pack before surgery, unfortunately I didn't like anything after surgery that I liked before surgery. Whatever you do, don't spend a bunch of money! Get the samples and try them afterwards. Believe me, you'll be glad you did!

Every dr will probably have their own vitamin regemin (sp). Mine seems to be more strict than most.
As for protein powders....I stood in the store yesterday just staring. My grocery has a large health food/ natural food section. I was overwhelmed. I hate to spend $20-$30 & than hate it. I'm going to ask a co-worker which one she buys from GNC. She seems pretty please with it.

Be very careful with supplements from the grocery store. Some of them are for bodybuilders and are loaded with sugar, plus most of them don't taste very good. I would seriously consider looking at www.bariatriceating.com and ordering their sampler pack. You get sample sizes of tons of different protein powders. You don't want to buy a big ginormous tub of stuff and then find out you don't like it. Believe me. I currently have 6 $30+ tubs of powder sitting on my kitchen counter that I can't touch. The sampler pack is the absolute best way to go!
