Sleepless in San Diego
I'm hoping that others have had this problem - I'm two weeks out from my surgery and I still have not built my stamina up. By 5 pm i'm brain dead and I feel a bit like a zombie - i'm asleep by 9 most nights (which is very unusual for me). Then I wake up some time between 11pm and 1am and can't go back to sleep for hours. I may get a couple more hours of sleep between 3 and 6. I've been taking the prescribed pain killer to help me go back to sleep (not very effective), but then I feel very groggy and crabby in the morning. My wife doesn't want me taking it anymore and I agree with her.
I exercise in the morning with a long walk and usually get a short walk in some time in the evening. I also do various light exercises during the day so I know i'm getting enough exercise.
I tried to get some work done yesterday (all computer work) and could only handle about three hours of it before my head just started swimming. I just finished what I had to complete for work between midnight and 2 am this morning because I can't sleep again. I'm very worried that the lack of sleep will affect my recovery and make it very hard to make it through a workday when I return to work.
I know I use to satiate myself with food when I got like this at night (night binging was one of the main factors for my weight gain). This is no longer an option so I'm going to have to find productive ways to get myself to fall back asleep when I wake up.
Any suggestions? anyone else have this problem? Thanks for your help!

I was out of it for 2 months!!
No worries, you are depleting your body at a rapid pace and thatstakes a toll.
In addition you are trying to heal from the alterations in your insides!
Take it easy, make sure you get all your fluids and walk and rest!
sip~walk~rest!!!

Have you tried waking your wife up when you can't get back to sleep? Sex is an awesome cure for insomnia. You might think this is a joke or that I'm kidding but I'm not. There's a hormone called prolactin released during orgasm that produces a feeling of tiredness and a need to relax. Try it. After all, if your wife doesn't want you to take the painkillers she might be willing to help you get to sleep in other ways.

Wow I didn't know that, so the next time I was up at 3am and can't go back to sleep Tim is going to be a VERY happy man the next day.
I had the same problems with sleepng early out. It's normal. Just take a little cat nap when you can. That's what I did. When I 1st went back to work I had to take a nap when I would get home then make dinner and bed around 10, then up at 4pm. It sucked but it gets better!

Lay back and rest!
Hi Boarderneil,
Sounds normal to me. I slept ten hours at night and took a cat nap from 2pm to 5pm. Your body is healing from major surgery. Lay back and rest!

Thanks everyone for your input. I shared all of the replies with my wife. I was quickly told that if I wanted to have sex at 3 in the morning that I should take care of myself! Its understandable because our 10 month old baby shares our bedroom with us and she wakes us up all of the time (and we don't want to wake her up either).
I personally loved the idea!!!
Thanks again everyone for your thoughts and help!

tell me to mind my own business, but maybe its time to put baby in her own room so dad can get some sleep, sex and baby can learn to be alone and safe in mommy in daddy's home, but not room.
(sorry if I offend)

Rain,
that would be a great thing if it was that easy. we only have a two bedroom townhouse and the other bedroom is occupied by my 18 year old step daughter. That leaves the master bedroom to also be the nursery. so it is rare that we have any time to ourselves.
It was a good thought !!!

The tiredness and the sleeping habits * the waking up after a short sleep * I had all that... It took me 5 weeks out before it went away and I didn't feel as if I had ran a marathon after doing light housework...
Just give it time... all the advice above is exactly the advice I got from people... It's major surgery... relax and let your body heal
* ps... the sex thing does work! OMG I can't beleive I just said that! *
