A Trip to the ER, can you help me out?
Friday I woke up with this horrible stomach ache. It felt like someone was squeezing my intestines and then slowly releasing them. It brought me to tears. My son drove me to the ER where they ran a battery of tests (blood cultures, chest x-rays, swallowing test which had me drink some liquid and they watched as the liquid went down to my stomach, ultra sound on my gall bladder, urinanalysis) after all of that was done, they said my pottassium was low and they didn't know exactly what was causing the pain. My surgeon's partner came in to see me and he basically said the same thing. They released me and told me if the pain got worse or I spiked a fever or had shoulder pain or back pain to come back in immediately. Today I feel better I still have some pain but not as bad as yesterday and not a constant pain like yesterday. I will see my surgeon on Monday, but I am wondering has anyone ever experienced this and if so was there a cause given for it?
Oh yeah, by the way today was the first day I introduced food in my diet (cottage cheese and tuna fish) and nothing came up which I am glad to report.
Thanks!

The good news is that pains that require surgery usually don't get better. It sounds like intestinal colic (like a baby) and gas pains. Maybe it is just the new plumbing getting used to everything. Are you pooping normally?? Introduce new foods slowly. Have you been having milk?? Are you lactose intollerant?? They tested you for all the bad stuff. Given time, most things work themselves out. I am glad you are better.
Cottage cheese is the best thing. Breakstones 2% was my favorite for a year.

Dr. Dyann is our resident expert
Dr. Dyann is our resident expert, and I would trust her with my life--I'm just here because I wanted to thank you for going to get seen. What worries me most is when people DON'T go to the ER, don't call their doctors... better to go and it not be something serious than vice versa! Glad you got seen, glad you're talking to your surgeon soon...

I had a similar experience a year after I had surgery. I went to the ER and they did a CT scan and doctors said everything was fine. I had the same pouch contractions. It kinda felt like a ball of gas in my pouch. It was so painful they had to give me morphine.(Yuuch!) After all the tests, nothing. After several hours in the hospital, it spontaneously went away. I could not understand it. I thought it was dehydration. I occasionaly get the onset of symptoms but I quickly drink lots of water and it goes away. So I ready don't know what causes it and neither does my doctor.

So glad you got seen. Nobody knows your body like you, and we need to pay attention to what our bodies tell us.

Pamela.... I hope you're feeling 100% by now! What a scare!!!
These emergencies episodes scare me more than anything else... My DH would not handle this at all... first of all, he lives in chronic pain and rarely leaves the house... to put HIM in charge of getting me somewhere is frightening... Can you picture me driving myself to the ER? (30 min away)?!?!?!?!
