Default Well, I had my surgery and didnt chicken out! Couple questions though, need advice!

I thought real hard about chickening out while I was at the hospital, but I did'nt. I had the surgery on Tue, July 31st, 2007. They told me I had a delayed pouch. Where my pouch would not release the liquids right away. Does this cause any problems and it must go away, right?

The major problem I have had so far is with milk. My doctor told me that they want me to drink two - three 8oz glasses of skim milk every day until my 10 day post op appointment. As soon as I have 1-2 oz of milk, I fell sick to my stomach like I am going to throw up, it lasts for about an hour. How in the world am I going to get that much milk down when I feel like I am going to die. I looked at the side of the milk jug and it said 13g of sugar in 1 cup. ( skim milk )
Any other advise on this first week.

I am currently not taking any supplements or vitamens. I dont really know what my stomach can take 3 days out.

you might now be lactose intolerant? some post-op patients become so - my advise is to let your surgeon know you can't tolerate the milk

are u taking any protein supplements at all? many surgeons require it .. I mix mine with cold water because milk bothers me some too

you honestly just may not be able to tolerate the milk at this stage. Later you will though.

I drink milk like crazy its very good for you. Protein and calcium. Congrats on getting the surgery done. Your journey has just begun. Best of luck.

It's very possible that you are lactose-intolerant after surgery... Before my surgery I used to drink milk all the time with no problems, but for the first couple of months afterwards, milk didn't agree with me AT ALL. (Now I am almost 8 months out, and milk is no problem.)

If you aren't taking any supplements and the only source of protein your surgeon wants you to get in is milk, I would call his office NOW and ask for some other suggestions... in my opinion, your first 10 days post-op is CRITICAL to get in protein (which helps with healing), so you might need to look at non-milk choices.

After my surgery (starting post-op day 2), I lived on New Whey liquid protein vials; you can get them at Vitamin Shoppe. They're plastic test-tube-like vials containing about 3 oz. of clear fluid; they contain 25 grams of protein and are about 100 calories each. They come in a couple of fruit flavors, and while they don't taste the greatest (kind-of like jello before it sets up), they pack a lot of protein in a very small amount, so it's easy to get in your daily protein requirements. (If drinking them full-strength doesn't agree with you, you can mix them with some water.)

Either way, I would ask your surgeon NOW and not wait the 10 days. Good luck!!

Oh, and remember to SIP SIP SIP as much water as you can manage!

I agree that the protein is a must. I am sure if you tell your doc you cant drink milk, they will give you some alternatives. As far as the delayed pouch..I am clueless as to what that is.. I know I do NOT have one tho.. because I can drink very normally.

And. finally, the supplements. My surgeons office didnt recommend starting them until 2 weeks out..

I was able to tolerate milk early out, but many can't due to the sugar in it.

I think the doc was trying to get the protein across to you and there are many other ways to get it via protein drinks.

My message always is, if it doens't feel right to your body, don't do it! Take things easy and what might bother you food wise now, may not in a few months!

Congrats on going through with you surgery!
