LongTimer Question - Water = Empty Pains
Hey All,
Could really use some advice. I am approx 17months post op have done really well and concentrate on getting my protein and not drinking water for a hour before or after eating so I can retain my full feeling. Problem is for about 5 months now (since it started heating up) I am drinking more water. Approx 30-45 min after consuming water I get the painful empty ache feeling and truely 10 minutes of that has me clutching my middle. It doesnt stop until I put something solid in my tummy. And then the cycle starts again.
I know this is increasing my food intake and I am not happy with it. Have tested out many things and could use ANY suggestions you might have.
Details
I intake plenty of protein a day most of it "pure protein" between 80-120g daily
Morning workout - drink 1 liter water followed 45 minutes later by protein breakfast
Daytime - eating and mixing water is troublesome while the weather is hot
Evening workout - I do a frozen Isopure protein slushy and follow it usually 1 hr later with 1 liter of water but have recently been waking up around midnight with "empty pains"
HELP! Still have 60pounds to go!

You mean you are having hunger pains? I'm confused. You are eating because you are having just pain or because you are hungry????

I'm kind of confused too... if it hurts when you stop drinking.. dont stop drinking I know the simple version.. but maybe you should only stop drinking when you plan on eating.. in which case.. the pain wouldnt happen if I read your post right.. since you are putting something solid in?

Maybe you have an ulcer? I battle them and they feel much better when there is food in there. If you aren't taking an acid blocker, try it. It really helps me.

I have the same feelings with my ulcer Tracie, but my problem is when I do eat something it usually comes back up when I am having that pain and THEN I feel better. It's almost like I have to eat and then vomit and then I don't have the pain anymore. Also I can drink a protein smoothie and it makes it stop for a bit, but then if I drink anything like crystal light or tea it is hurting all over again until I eat and throw up and then feel better til I start drinking again. It seems like a viscious cycle when mine is acting up too. I was thinking she may have an ulcer. It just feels better when there is something soothing in my pouch like a smoothie. I guess the milk coats it for a bit.

Trina,
I wonder if the difference between the 2 of us is that you battle strictures and I have an enlarged stoma? I can't throw up even when I want to cuz the food is instantly in my intestines. hmmm....

My thanks to all of you!
I think you might have pinpointed the problem. Hoping its not an ulcer but I have been lax in taking antiacids. So with my vitamins this morning I popped an antiacid and I can feel a difference. Even though I have drank 2 liters of water since eating my breakfast just before 8am, it is now almost noon and I am NOT having what I thought were empty pains (and now I think they were acid pains).
Plan to keep on the pepcid and have my doc check for an ulcer. Thanks all I would not have tied it together without your help.

I don't know Tracie, but I know my stoma is a little smaller than the average. The doc told me at my one year appt that he just didn't want to mess with it unless it's something I just can't live with or I'm not getting my nutrients in because he's afraid I will have problems losing all I want to then. Which makes sense. He says you can stretch to the point of sabotaging the results of the surgery, so that's one reason I deal with my problems. He also told me after I do lose all the weight and I'm maintaining that he can always stretch it a little after that for more comfort for me if that's what I want, but I will have to understand that being able to eat easier will pose a possible problem of gaining some weight back. I am HAPPY I can throw up! I don't think I could handle being sick feeling and not being able to throw up. Either way, I agree that when I have an ulcer and my pouch is empty......it hurts like CRAZY, sometimes to the point that I CAN'T eat because of the pain, that's if I wait too long to eat.
gWiz.....I'm happy we could help you with the ideas and you feel better!
