Default 2 Weeks Post -op, Constipation

OK.. I searched and searched for constipation, and I found LOTS of stuff about it.. but I didnt see anything on early out constipation. I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow. I am unsure what I can take this early out. I will call the doc tomorrow if nothing has happened, but I am on day 8, and would really like things to move along today if possible. I cant imagine that anything such as MOM or a mild laxative would hurt me.. but I dont really want to take the chance...

Usually a dulcolax suppository or MOM should do the trick. Keep hydrated as well!! Of course check with your MD.

Jen I had the same problem, and of course pain meds didn't help. I would for sure talk to doc, but in meantime get benefiber, and take it 3x a day. In about 2-3 weeks you will find that you will go regular. Janie

If it was really bad I would do the suppository. A protein shake made with skim milk usually got my bowels moving with in 1 day. I think it was the milk. Hang in there I know its not fun. I had it pretty bad. Hugs!

Jen, I too was constipated in the first two weeks. I spoke to my surgeon's nurse and she recommended using Benefiber and if that didn't work I could progress to trying some MOM. Had to use the MOM but only once and the problem was solved.

My surgeon put me on Senokot-S. It worked like a charm. After I got going, 2x a day was too much so I cut back to 1x at night and life was good. Like Dyann said, good hydration is necessary because the S is for softener and it does that by getting more water into the bowels. After I started eating more food I was able to discontinue using it all together.

Maybe the med-peeps can clarify something a pharmicist told me about Benefiber (I bought some but never used it). She told me that I should be careful of when I took the Benefiber because if I took it near the time I take vitamins or supplements, it (the Benefiber) could absorb the vits and flush them out and I wouldn't get the benefit of them. Yes, No, Maybe?

Since I take my vits 4x a day with a meal I never used the Benefiber. Luckily I never needed it with the Senokot-S.

Good luck Jen! I hope some of this gets you moving!

Ok...I actually called the makers of Benefiber and they told me that it won't cure constipation, but will help keep you regular. So, whatever, I still give it to my kids. I've also heard that about the fiber...

The thing that cured my constipation issues (especially with the calcium and iron supplements...plus hydration issues) was adding in/increasing magnesium and vitamin C. There are a couple forms of mg...the citrate tends to help with muscle cramps and the oxide tends to help more with gut issues. YMMV
