Default Onto real food now...

I am 11 days post op, and converted from the puree stage to soft. I have not found anything I can't eat, though I am being very cautious about it. I have been adding food one at a time so that if something doesn't agree with me I would know what it is, but so far nothing. I have tried egg, milk, cheese, tuna, fish and it all stays down without a problem, and no issues with it.

Some friends of mine had surgery a year or two ago, and can't believe I am eating real food already, but I confirmed it with my surgeon's office before I even started.

I have a dietician appointment next week, so I should find out then if I am doing the right thing. I am not hungry, nor can I eat very much at a time, and I make a point of stopping before I get too full. I am trying to track my food/water/exercise on fitday.com.

I sure hope I am doing this right.

I dont have a pureed stage. I am 4 days out (if you dont count the first day)... my nutritionist called today and said start soft foods tomorrow..... stuff like eggs, tuna, chicken... ricotta.. and a bunch of other foods.. she also said... ONLY eat 1/2 a medicine cup (they gave us a GOB of them when we left the hospital).. so 1 tablespoon of food. Im sure it will be enough, because Im not hungry. Today Ive gotten in like 45 grams of protein... and over 60 oz of fluid.. im nervous about the food tho... what did you eat during the pureed stage?

Default Hi Jen

I've been watching to see how your surgery went! Awesome to be on the other side isn't it!

The program I was on for pureed was that I bought some pureed frozen dinners from the hospital (this is their program) called Tre Puree. It was ground up meat, veggies, and potatoes. Honestly, sounds gross, but I didn't think it was that bad. I was real ready to get food though.

I only did that for two meals a day. They also had me do Optisource protrein drinks...those were much worse than the frozen meals..YUCK. I have heard that some people do the Carnation Instant Breakfast - sugar free. They also at the hospital gave me Cream of Wheat, Jello, and cream soups. I couldn't eat very much of it, but those are some ideas. Oh yeah, yogurt and cottage cheese too.

Good Luck to you. I went back to work on Monday, part time (1 week after surgery) and have found that it is almost a full time job eating. So I work, I eat, I work, I drink.......still tired though. I've been coming home and taking a nap in the afternoons, and I am typically NOT a napper.

CIB made me so tired... I've tried a few different protein drinks. We had to start that stuff on day 2. My favorite right now.. (and that will probably change tomorrow).. is Muscle Milk.. that actually tastes GOOD... its not sicky sweet.. and its not THICK.. argh.. Im so tired of thick sweet things!

I thought Id be more psyched about the food thing.. just not so much into it... if I can keep loosing 2pounds a day lol.. I may never eat!

The best is ricotta with a bit of spaghetti sauce, melted low fat mozarella and sprinkle of parmesean heated in the micro until warm. Oh, yummy. I added sauted onion and ground chicken to it when I started meats. I lived on the stuff.

Poached fish was a real staple in the more solid phase. You will find your way and it sounds like you are doing it perfectly.

This isn't something I'm very proud of but at about a week out I went to a family BBQ and I ate 1/2 a Steak Taco. It stayed down, but I felt full for the rest of the day.

Like I said, it wasn't something I was proud of but I did.

Lori, sounds like you are doing things perfectly, and eating perfectly I am amazed that you have had no "episodes" where the food didn't stay down or didn't feel right. Girl, you have been spared!!

Jen, don't give up on Carnation Instant Breakfast. Set it aside for now and go back to it again and try it in about a month. It is the easiest and best way to get ALL your protein in for the day, in one 8 ounce drink. I add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to mine (which is 31 grams of protein right there). I don't have it in the morning -- more likely lunch or even dinner sometimes.

I'm 3 months post op, and I have attempted to continue to try to eat different things. If I eat one spoonful too much I get sick, and chicken made me VERY sick. What interests me greatly is how different we all are in what works for us.
