Can't swallow even water 3 months out!!!
I am posting on behalf of a friend who had surgery 3 months ago. He has lost 100 pounds already. He can not swallow even water. If he manages to get any thing down at all it comes back up with in 2 hours.
Any suggestion??

Rain, seems to me that his surgeon should have the answers to this question. I am very concerned.
I am 3 months out now, and from the beginning I handled clear fluids well. And, of course, I'm preaching to the choir here -- you have lots of experience with that.
Something could be obstructing?

he has been scoped and scanned and they can not find a stricture or a bleed.
They found his gall bladder enlarged and filled with sludge so they removed it last Friday...3 days he felt better than it started up agian?
His doc is not sure what it is and they think giving him a line for nutrition is his only answer untill they find out why he can not swallow!
Van, I thought you had difficulty with solid foods, how was in the beginning with fluids?

Rain~
Fluids never a problem ..except when I had strictures.
Fluids have been my only true friend along with cheese for the past two + years.
But I'd do it again

If your friend just had his gall bladder a week ago, he should be followed closely by his surgeon. Just because he didn't show a stricture when they found his gall bladder was unhappy doesn't mean he doesn't have one now. I would suggest he put a call in to the surgeon ASAP and have whoever's on call give him instructions. There used to be a time when Gall Bladder removal bought you a week in the hospital, and now it's a "drive thru" procedure. His surgeon needs to know this.

If there isn't a physical obstruction (cleared by endoscopy, and CT for small bowel/large bowel) then maybe there is a functional obstruction like esophageal spasm or something called achalasia. Those are diagnosed on an esophagram to start. There is obviously something not right and I hope they keep looking until they find it. If it doesn't seem right...it isn't. I hope they get some fluids into your friend fast!!!

Sounds vaguely familiar last year. I had a similar situation. I think it was esophogeal spasms. I know I ended in hospital unable to eat or drink anything myself, and when they scoped me I was cleared. I'm not sure what to tell your friend aside from trying to relax, I know I made it much worse with my constant anxiety of not knowing what was wrong, and doctors all threw their hands up in the air and said we know not what is causing this problem. Sorry you are going through this and hopefully you will get it resolved quickly. I know for me I drink a whole lot of my nutrition as I have a hard time eating. Janie
