1) Dilauded is my
favorite pain Killer
2) As others have said to me on this board....
If you experience sharp pains after your first week post-op, get to the DR. Asap.
3) As a bariatric patient you have to be responsible for making sure the Doctors know about "you", what you can and cannot tolerate
Yesterday morning, the sharp pains I was having in my side had gotten even worse. I called my DR. and he was out of town, but his head nurse called me back immediately and told me to go to the emergency room. Once I got to the emergency room, I got scared because they took me right back. I have never been there before and had it take less than a couple of hours of waiting time. Anyhow, they got me all hooked up and the emergency room Dr. told me that the pain I was experiencing was very indicative of a blood clot in the lungs

Can you say terrified at this point? Not to mention that I was totally beating myself up for having let this go on for 3 days. At first I thought it was a muscle ache, then maybe some tender scar tissue and at worse maybe I had ripped something. But a blood clot terrified me.
So they take blood, hook me up to another IV, realize they didn't get enough blood so they come back for more, get a urine sample, take X-rays, do an EKG and then come in to tell me I need a CAT scan. So the nurse brings me a huge cup filled with some kind of cocktail with a solution in it. She tells me it will taste good because 1/2 of the solution was orange juice. I told her that I could not drink anything with that much sugar, and she looked at me like I was from Mars and said "but you aren't diabetic are you"? Long story short, I stood firm of the big glass of OJ, and instead they brought me a Barium smoothie. After downing that, it was a two hour wait for the CAt scan. I had never had one of those before and found the whole thing to be fascinating. I think that they used to be a lot worse as I was expecting a coffin-like structure, but it was an open Cat scan and it only took 10 minutes.
I was taken back to my room to wait for the results.
I was so relieved when the Doc came back in and said there were no rips, no obstructions, and NO blood clots. But what there was is a sac of fluid that had developed and lodged itself between my rib cage and surgery spot. So it is kind of like an internal blister rubbing up against where the surgery was done on my intestine. He said that although it was very painful, unless it continues to gather fluid or develop an infection, that it is harmless and that I just needed to follow-up with my doctor on Monday to see what we could do to make it go away.
What a day, but obviously, it was the best possible outcome as far as things that could have been causing the pain. The doctors had me on those damn IV for 11 hours yesterday, so I've put on more weight again. But I have been scanned from tip to toe and know for sure there are no clots and that everything is just where it is supposed to be with the exception of this fluid pouch.
