Dumping Question
Hello my wonderful loser friends,
I've got a question for you about dumping. I have known that with too much sugar I'll get shaky, tired, stomach cramps, and heart palpitations. Therefore, I've stayed far away from it and read all my labels. On Saturday for whatever stupid reason I could give you, I had my first overdose on sugar. I deliberately ate 2 choc. chip cookies and a handful of kisses. I had a slip moment of going back to some old ways.
Here's the question, though: Within 20 minutes I was so exhausted all I could do was walk upstairs and go to bed. I went into a deep sleep that lasted 2 hours!!! I woke up scared. Has this happened to any of you?
Oh and by the way, I did the next right thing and ate just protein and lots of water the rest of the day. I'm not beating myself up for this, but just learning from it!

Luckily, I haven't had to experience any dumping yet...but I'm only a week out and only on liquids.
However, I checked my Bariatric patient packet from my doctor and in the part that explains dumping it does have extreme fatigue listed as a symptom.

Yes.
That was one of my major symptoms of dumping aside from the rapid heart beat, the sweatty feeling, dizzy, lightheaded etc. I could usually fight off the sleepies as it usually happened at work. On the weekends though if it was an overdose of sugar then yes it was a major nap. I was doing pretty good on not dumping since revision, but I'm finding I'm still having mini dumping going on the last couple of days.

Yep
Yep - tried a few sips of Baileys at my mom-in-laws at Christmas... really was good that she could actually see that I had a bad reaction, as she stopped mourning over me after that, you know, "oh, poor baby, can't even have any pie..."
When she saw me pass out on the couch, and saw the half a shot glass of Baileys that I had left over, she realized why I genuinely have no problem with skipping the sugar. I have no reaction like that with other liquors, though I don't indulge much. Just had to try some Baileys, though!

I dumped just yesterday on 2 tsp of mashed potatoes. In addition to the fatigue and heart racing I get nausea that leads to a tiny bit of vomiting, flushing, sweats, chills, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Yeah, a great big reminder of why I love this tool and don't find it hard to stay away from carbs and sugar!

That's the crazy thing. You never know when you are going to dump. I've dumped on yogurt (when I realized I ate too much). Sheesh. Now I am probably too cautious without very much energy. I will have my 3 months lab tests next month and I am eager to know what my levels are. I just don't think I'm eatng enough but I just can't get any more down.

okay, good to know that I'm not the only one that "passes" out into a sleep after eating that junk! It's just freaked me out after I woke up and realized I was asleep for 2 hours!

I seem to dump more on liquid sugars.. like I can have 10 grams of sugar in one bite of food and it doesn't bother me but if i drink something with more than 5 grams and I'm shaky, sweaty and heart races... never get sleepy though. That would be nice... i never sleep well.

Dumping is so capricious! I can generally eat ~15g of sugar now before I dump. However, I dumped Saturday on some homemade (lardy) refried beans. Fried food causes dumping. Fatty food causes dumping. Sugar alcohols are more heinous for me than a little bit of sugar. That being said, sometimes I dump on less than 10g of sugar, or I don't on 20g. It just depends on the day, my energy, my overall health, my stress level.
The fact that dumping is capricious is exactly what keeps me from overindulging. Am I out in public? Or am I at home and just want a little something sweet? m&m's are great for that, since I get over the chocolate after maybe 10-20 at the most. Before the GBS I could eat half a big bag no problem, so a dozen eaten one at a time, tasting every bit and crunching the shell is a treat. If I am out in public I am much more conservative, as sweating like a pig and feeling all barfy aren't very sociable.
