Default Grrrr Blockage

Spent another 3 days in hospital this week as I had an inflamed coil of my bowel and it stopped everything moving, I wanted to crawl up the wall with pain. Please tell me this isnt the usual.

Danno, I'm sorry you are having this struggle. I know at least one other person has had an intestinal blockage, but it is a serious complication, and I'm glad you were seen. This is NOT the usual, not everyone has complications. Unfortunately, men are much more likely than women to have complications like this. The experts don't appear to know why.

Here's a quote from Medscape.com: "Analysis of the preoperative risk factors revealed that only weight and male gender were predictive for the development of severe life-threatening complications. Neither age nor BMI was associated with a greater number of severe life-threatening complications. Smoking history, hypertension, osteoarthritis, diabetes, sleep apnea, use of CPAP, and revision cases also did not correlate with the development of complications."

Sorry to hear you aren't doing well. It's really not normal, but it does happen! I had an obstruction 1 week after my surgery, which required a 2nd surgery. I was vomiting, and it was very gross, I didn't have the stomach pain, although I was on some serious IV drugs.....I guess it depends where your blockage is. I didn't have to have an NG tube either, which I was very happy about! Still, I remember being NPO for 7 days and feeling pretty icky, so I can relate. Hang in there. I hope you'll be like me and recover and not have any more problems! That's the dream! Take care.

Danno it isn't normal but it has happen to a couple of people I know. It should be taken very seriously. I hope it has already been taken care of and you are feeling a little better. Stay on top of your progress.

Both times I have had a blockage, I have been taken into hospital. Nil by mouth and morphine until the pain settles and I start working again. Not happy if this is going to keep happening.

Default I have to say...

You are the first one I've heard that has had two intestinal blockages. Strictures (where the pouch opening narrows due to scar tissue) often happen more than once. Are you being given anything to keep things moving, so it doesn't happen again? And I know that hydration is extremely important.
