Default Question for the ladies...

OK, girls, I apologize for this oogy question, but I need to ask someone. I've never been one to have vaginal infections, but over the past few days I've developed a real itch problem. There's no abnormal discharge at all, just the itch, and I'm wondering if this is happening beause I'm eating yogurt on a regular basis now. I've never really eaten yogurt regularly, but it's become a staple of my diet lately because I've been having pissy-pouch problems and yogurt goes down easy and doesn't give me diarrhea (unlike milk, which I can rarely drink anymore). Could the cultures in the yogurt be causing the itch? Is there anything I can do about it, other than not eating so much yogurt? I asked my surgeon's NP, but all she said was to use an itch cream like Gyne-Lotrimin. DUH!! I've already been doing that, but I was hoping for better info as to the cause... Have any of you had this problem?

Rhonda, I don't think the yogurt is the culprit, as yogurt is good to eat when you have a yeast infection because of its GOOD bacteria. It actually fights yeast. It has to be from something else. I get an infection out of the blue sometimes just from having sex. Had any sex lately? LOL Sorry, but don't have any other answer for you.

I would just get some OTC Yeast infection things you insert and it gets rid of it in like 3 days or something. It has been a long time since I have had this problem I would think it is not GB related. Just a guess! Good luck! That sucks I am so sorry!

FYI---I was told by Kelly at Dr. Callery's office, that 2 things she sees alot of are yeast infections and thrush in the mouth within a couple of months of surgery. I had thrush. Two reasons she gave me were: #1 The high dose of antibiotics in the hospital and #2 The extreme changes that our bodies go through after surgery.

Default So many things can get a yeast infection going

I was much more prone to yeast infections when I was in my 20s, and found that almost anything that changed the acidity balance of the vagina could spark one. I only got the discharge for a full-blown infection, mostly I just itched. I know you've already got something going on, whether a yeast infection or not, but here are a few preventive measures for future:
  • Wear only cotton panties - and I don't mean nylon with a cotton crotch inset, but cotton through and through.
  • Microwave your clean drawers (as we used to call 'em in Texas) before you put them on. I know this sounds a little funny, but it really worked for me when I was getting yeast infections time after time. Sticking your panties in the microwave for ten seconds kills any bacteria on them (supposedly). I have to admit this may have worked simply because I believed it worked.
  • Here's why - even clean panties can be carrying bacteria. Most people do not use water that is hot enough temperature in their washing machines to actually kill bacteria or yeast. If you, like most people, only use cold water to wash your clothes, you may be retransmitting the itch-causer every time you put on a clear pair of drawers. So if you don't want to cook your undies, at least use very hot water to wash them.
  • Never re-use a towel--I've started yeast infections from using a towel more than one day. Proved it to myself more than once.
  • Get out of your gym clothes the moment that you can. Staying in your sweaty clothes can ramp up yeast growth.
    Warning: TMI alert!
  • Always urinate after sex. This is less about a yeast infection than a urinary tract infection, but the symptoms can be somewhat similar. A few bacteria are always pushed up the urethra during sexual activity, and urination washes the tract clean.

An easy way to find out if it's the yogurt is to stop eating it for a week, and don't change anything else. If the itch stops, then you have your culprit.

Default Thanks!

Thanks, everyone, for your responses. I haven't detected any yeast at all, but maybe it's just up inside where I can't see it. And believe me, sex has been the LAST thing on my mind for the past two months, so it's certainly not related to that!! LOL! I guess I'll keep an eye on the problem and if it doesn't go away in a few days I'll get an appointment with the GYN to get tested for nasties.

Cheers!

P.S. I guess this does bring up a question -- how long after surgery when did you start feeling "frisky" again? I can't imagine being able to tolerate the thumping and grinding that comes with sex in the two obvious positions that come to mind (missionary and, um, doggystyle) because I'm still sore through the abdomen and can barely lay in bed by myself, let alone with someone on top of me! How did you deal with that and how long did it take to get back to normal for you?

Get on top of him! At the 10 day checkup, we were told to get right back into it and start paying attention to our relationships. The longer you stay away from sex the harder it is to get back into it. I say tackle him down and jump on him right now!!

Ummmmmmm...........5 days I believe it was. LOL We have been like rabbits since I was 2 or 3 months out! LOL Ask Dr. Dyann, I liked her answer to this question, but don't remember what it was, just know it made me laugh. Was something about laying there and letting him do all the work. LOL
