Mine was like Laurie P. I just kindof wokeup ... realized I was alive and dosed back out again.
Later I woke up in my room ... looked around and thought again ... ummm I'm alive and okay ... umm and I'm feeling all right. That's when I started feeling good inside!!
How about the last thing you thought before you went under?
For me, the anastheist (sp?) had a hard time getting the needle with the drugs into the vein on the side of my hand. He got someone else to do it ... now THAT FREAKIN HURT!!!! Hee hee!
So he got it in and I felt the drug going in and I told him 'hey, that's burning' .. he just nodded along... I thought and said... HEY, That's really burning!! He just kept nodding his head .. but I was getting scared ... and then I was out!
THIS WAS REALLY ODD to me! Hee hee!

I had never been "under" before and was so happy not to wake up nauseated.
Then when I had my complications and 2nd surgery I remember Dr. Potts yelling at the nurses for letting my IVs go bad (my veins were in bad shape by then) and him hurriedly shoving in a new central line. NOT a pleasant memory. Although I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and that is just one of the many.

The first thing I remember when I opened my eyes in recovery was looking at the clock, which was directly across from my bed, and thinking it was later than I thought it would be. My surgery was scheduled for 7:30 a.m. and I expected to be in recovery and awake by noon, but it was actually about 2:30 when I woke up. The surgeon told my mom afterwards that it took longer than he expected because my liver was bigger than he thought it would be, given that I did the liver-shrinking diet for two weeks prior to surgery.
The second thing I remember is that I started itching like crazy because I had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. Oh, and also something like "well, I made it through alive!!".

Last thing I remember before I was out was being wheeled into the OR. I guess they put me on the table after I was sedated. First thing I remember after waking up is being in pain in the recovery room. Then they gave me morphine and all was better.

memories
I remember being wheeled from somewhere to somewhere, every time they went over a door jam I cried it hurt so bad. I was begging them to stop. Next thing I remember was my mother moving the hair off my face. At this point I was sure something had gone wrong and I was going to die. My mother loves us and has cared for us, but sympathy is not in her vocabulary, so I assumed if she was being so 'nice' I must be dying. Then I looked at her and said "Ok, get me up, I need to walk to get skinny" The nurse just looked at me and said "You need to wait a little while longer" I was still a little 'high' from the meds and said "Look here skinny, I don't need your lip, get out of my way". Good thing she had a sence of humor! About an hour later I woke up again, this time she and my mom helped me up.

How interesting, that our reactions were all so different...
The first thing I remember after coming out of the anasthesia was feeling like I had to consciously THINK about breathing-- it felt like if I stopped remembering to breathe, I would have just STOPPED breathing, if that makes any sense. It wasn't HARD to breathe, but I just felt like I had to consciously make myself do it... it scared the heck outta me! Nurses said that was because of all the painkillers they shot into me during surgery, and thankfully the sensation wore off after a few minutes.
I went into surgery at 7:30 AM, was back in the ICU by about 10:30 and dozed on and off until they found a room for me at around 4 in the afternoon.
I also remember being quite surprised that I wasn't in a lot more pain. Granted, they had me pumped full of narcotics right after surgery, but even after they wore off, it was really just a noticeable soreness, like after doing a bunch of sit-ups. THAT was the most pleasantly surprising part of the whole experience.

The nurse asking where I was and what level of pain did I have on a scale of 1-10. I was a 7. I also remember my husband saying to me when I woke up in my own room...."You can't go anywhere like this" I wasn't planning to.

I remember waking up in recovery with this tight feeling in my chest and my nurse kind of freaking out because my BP had spiked. I was just greatful to be on the losing side. I had this calm feeling and peace. I wish I could grab that moment back somstimes.
