Am I eatting enough? 2 weeks post op
Hi All,
Just curious if I am getting enough food in. I started soft foods last week. I've tried a scrambled egg (ate about 1/4 of it), string cheese for lunch (ate about 1/3 of it) very small piece of turkey from the deli (about a half a slice that you could practically see through). a few bites of an apple, and aslice of very crisp bacon. Only one of the things per meal. All went down without any problems, I am just not hungry at all and don't want to push it.
I am getting in plenty of water, that is definitely not a problem. I am also walking 2.5 miles daily.
Any advise?

Carol, what you need to do is figure out if you are getting in enough protein. You should be trying to get in at least 60 grams in a 24 hour period. I do remember how difficult it was to eat at your stage. I just had no appetite at all but it is important to get in your protein. I still did a lot of protein drinks at your stage. I would drink sf carnation instant breakfast plus add in 1/3 c of dry milk. That would give me 22 grams of protein. I would see how much protein I could get from regular food but often needed to supplement with protein drinks. Take it nice and slow with the food. If you don't feel good after eating something don't try again until a few weeks later. Its very much a learning process to see what works for you but it is important to get in your protein and water.

I've been using the protein suppliments once daily (getting about 30-35 grams in one serving). I know I should be getting alittle more but can't fathum having the shake twice daily yuk!

Beth's got it right, though
The protein is incredibly important - without it, your body will start cannibalizing your muscles for fuel. Your heart is a muscle. NOT trying to scare you. It just cannot be overstated that you must get your protein in. And bacon isn't really a good source of protein, it's far outweighed by the fat content in it.
By my reckoning, you got less than 10 grams of protein from your food, added to your protein drink and being generous, you might have gotten a total of 45 grams for the day. I know that you're not hungry, and that you don't want to push it, but you can take Beth's suggestion and add dry milk to any warm or cold beverage to up your protein as well.
Gotta keep you healthy, girl! Looking forward to those before and after photos.

Just curious if anyone knows why there is such a variation in diet restrictions post op... I would love to eat some meat! All my info says no meat till 5 weeks out and even then it has to be pureed, but here meat was fine at 2 weeks post op....

That is a mystery on why some people can eat certain things that others can't. I was told to eat normal food by my 2nd week also. I was wondering the same thing. My fiance's mom had WLS and everything for me was completely different from her. But I guess that it depends on the doctor.

That is why it is important to follow YOUR doctors rules. We can allcome on and say what our doctors told us to do.. but there are such variations. My suggestion.. if you dont know if you are eating enough, or correctly, call your surgeon. He should have armed you with this knowledge.

I am on pureed foods to include meat- they have not asked me to add protein - I am doing that on my own, from all that I have read that this is so important. I am constantly amazed by the differences in Dr's restrictions.

Each doctor has their own rules for food. Even my doctor has given out different rules to different patients. Key thing is to follow YOUR own doctors guidelines. In the very early weeks its important to follow, you don't want to push it with your pouch...its learning how to deal with the change.
Hang in there.....enjoy each phase, it doesn't last very long.
