Default Appointment with Nutritionist

I have an appointment with my Nutritionist on Wednesday. I need to think of a list of things I need to ask, such as:

Protein - How in the world can I get in enough protein? (can't stomach the supplements I've tried so far)

Vitamins - tried the samples given to me in the Hospital - I can't take them - but I can take Flintstones???

Iron - the surgeon's booklet says "for menstrating females" - this doesn't apply to me - I'm assuming I still need to take iron - but do I need to take as much as younger women?

This is costing me out-of-pocket - insurance won't pay anything on it. On the other hand, it's supposed to only be $30 instead of the $125 it cost the first time I went!

Can any of you think of other things I need to ask?

I can't think of anything too specific since I'm pretty early out, but I wanted to say good luck!

There are goals and what is realistic at your stage of the game. Fluids are the most important followed by protein. Vitamins are important starting at about a month out you will tap into your stores. B12 (sublingual), Iron, calcium, bariatric mulit with thiamine, multioil or essential fatty acids are the important ones. I never took protein supplements. Once I could eat, I targeted high protein and low calorie, low fat items. Low fat string cheese, cottage cheese, deli meats etc. You will find your way with what works for you.

If they have specific food lists for each stage, I would ask for copies. (I hung mine on the fridge so I could check and plan ahead for meals, and it also helped hubby to know what stage I was at and what I could eat.)

As for vitamins-- we weren't told about any specific brand, they just suuggested a multi chewable (1 per day if an adult dosage, 2 per day if Flintstones). I take an adult chewable (with calcium, no iron) in the morning and an adult chewable (with iron) in the evening, plus a sublingual B-12 3x/week.

DO ask your nutritionist what s/he suggests regarding calcium. We are supposed to get in 4 servings of high-calcium dairy per day, and if not, we have to supplement with calcium chewables for every serving of dairy we miss. Calcium is tricky, though-- some kinds are absorbed better than others, and you have to watch what other vitamins/minerals you take it with-- like I believe iron blocks the absorption of calcium (hence, I take a multi without iron).

As for protein-- have you tried the Profect or New Whey vials? They each pack 25g protein per serving and are only 2.9 ounces-- the day I came home from the hospital, I could get one serving down in 4 sips. They don't taste the greatest, but the amount you have to get down is tiny compared to most protein supplements. And they aren't dairy-based, which was important for me as I was lactose-intolerant for the first month or so after surgery. They remind me of liquid jello-- not as "thin" as regular water but not thick and syrupy, either. (I believe New Whey also makes a 42g protein vial, but my nutritionist says that they body can't really absorb more than 25-30g at a time unless you're extremely fit, i.e., a bodybuilder.)
