Default Your RNY.. how long is your 'limb'?

Hi all,

I came across this in another forum.

Did you know there's more than one kind of RNY? Basically the amount of malabsorption is dependant on the length of your 'alimentary limb'.

There's the Proximal, the Medial, the Distal and the Duodenal (which is really the DS surgery).

Each one has a different malabsorption rate. My limb is 130cm which ends up being the Medial RNY with a moderate level of malabsorption.

This article does not indicate how much malabsorption .. but my doctor told me that I would have a 30% malabsorption. He doesn't like going higher than this.

Which one do you have?

Interesting - huh?

Interesting. I knew of these, but didn't realize it was only a matter of how much intestine was by-passed. (With the exception of the Switch of course). Fascinating. Me, I'm a medial, our surgeons think alike. Your doing Great Bella!!!

Ill have to look into this. I did hear my new doctor look over my records asking how long my limb was. It was something in the low 100's.

I think is interesting .. the more malabsorption - the more weight loss - but there's a fine line...

If you have too much mal ... you'll have other problems ... so you have to be careful.

I am proximal, they bypassed 100cm and my doc does this with all his patients now. I asked for 120cm, but he said he doesn't do them and most patients respond well to proximal. The more you increase the bypass, the less absorption, so he finds 100cm a good balance between malabsorbtion and pouch size.

I heard on TV that SUPER OBESE (BMI very high) that they do 150-200 bypass, but that now most days the do the DS procedure with super obese instead.

At the link you provided, which is great...I have to wonder about the 75-50% of extra body weight loss. I lost 100% of my extra body weight (within 2 pounds) and I had proximal. I guess I am not in the typical group which I good, I would NOT have been happy with 70 pound weight loss!

When I was asking my surgeon all sorts of questions during my pre-op appointment, he said in my case he would bypass about 150 cm-- normally with BMI's below 50 or 55 they only bypass 100 cm, but with my BMI (it was about 58 at time of surgery), they bypass 150 cm.

I don't think I ever asked how many cm they actually bypassed during surgery... all I know is, I've been losing relatively slowly but steadily (at least up until last week, which was my first no-loss-- hopefully this week the numbers will start to move again!), but the good part is that I have had no complications so far and my labs have all come back normal. So apparently 150 cm is a good number for me so far...
