This is very interesting, I'll have to ask about it at my first post-op visit. How do you pick a goal number? Do surgeon's usually do this with you when you are further out? Is it normal BMI vs how you feel, how much you can lose etc.? I just want to be healthy and more active too.

I think the percentages listed in that article are just the average.

My doctor did not give me a weight goal - but felt that most of my weight would be off after a year or so. My body would 'settle' by then to what it wants to weigh.

I used to always beat myself up over my weight until years ago I saw a doctor that had this special program. It was a weight measurement they use in the space program. They put a little wire on my right big toe and shot these whatevers into my system. You don't feel anything.

Anyway, when it came back there was a lonnnnnng printout on the details my body composition, water, fat about 7 pages... lots of stuff. I didn't even care about all that stuff because I knew I was in good health. BUT the one thing was .... it tells you what YOU should weigh. (Not someone your height etc) but exactly what YOUR body should weight.

IT SAID I SHOULD WEIGH 168!!

I almost dropped a lung when he said that!!!!!!!!!!!!

why, because allllll those early years I would starve myself, workout etc... but no matter how much I tried, I could not get past EXACTLY 168!!. Can you believe that? A few times I was able to hold 165. Once I even hit 150 .. but that literally only lasted about 5 minutes. Hee hee! I had to eat!!!

So even though I would like to be smaller - my realistic weight goal is now 165. This is because I gave my sister a kidney a few years ago and that's about 3 pounds. Umm of course, I'm older now ... but still I'm shooting for 165 or ... thereabouts!

My doctor also gave me this general guideline:

1. 6 weeks - should lose 10 - 12% of my weight

2. 3 months 15 - 18% of my weight

3. 6 months 23 - 27% of my weight

4. 1 year 33 - 38% of my weight ... (which is 175)

The goal I've (re)set for myself of 165 ... is a tight 10 or a loose 12. But even if I only get to this 38% of my weight I will weight 175 which is a solid size 12and I will be WELL into the 'human' range. )

175 on my frame is very, very nice!!!

I haven't weighed in for weeks ... no sense upsetting myself but I know I'm a slow loser as I was not quite what the guide said I should have been at week 6. I'm coming up on my 3rd month out .... hopfully I make that goal range. We'll see.

I'm not so worried though ... as long as I'm losing weight ... I'm happy. I can tell that certainly by looking in the mirror ... even without the scale.

I just can't bear to be GAINING anymore weight which I surely would have done by now without wls!

Bella - this is sooooo interesting - of course my DR didn't give me a weight goal and they only do one surgery which I believe is the least Malabsorption - He said he takes one foot of intestine. When I get back to work I plan on printing this off and see if my body follows suit Thanks again - I can't say it enough - I LOVE THIS FORUM

Bella, I didn't get a goal weight either, so between the doctor and I, we set it at 180 as I am just over 5'9inches tall. Not quite 5'9 1/2....so I say 5'9.

I had that same test done as you many years ago when I weighed 180 and what I found interesting was the water weight I had and the body fat percentage.

My body doesn't do well below 160 pounds...never did at any stage through my teen or adult years. I go by how I feel and the number now doesn't really mean much to me....isn't that sick! But it really doesn't - I feel normal, look somewhat normal and thats fine with me. My BMI is 24.7, in the normal range.

OK.. I asked my surgeon about this today.. which one he did.. and he said at my size, he will do between 120 and 150 cm. I told him I wanted 150 and he smiled... wonder if that means he will do it. My doc said if I got to 220 hed consider me a success.. I told him no way.. If I didnt hit 199 at the very least... I wouldnt be happy. and.. I am secretly shooting for 175.

The bariatrics place said 122 for my goal.....but my PCP and Gyn said 135. I am usually between 129 and 132. I am happy with it.....and those numbers don't factor build and muscle anyhow. Pick what seems realistic and don;t be afraid to change it as you see fit!

You know - you and I are very close in our height. At 5'8 1/2 I round up to 5'9" because sometimes I measure in at 5'8" 3/4 .. which is strange.

Hey I can't wait to get down to your size! At 165 and my rounded up 5'9" I will be 24.4 which just within the normal range. This is very close to your bmi at 170!!

To tell the truth - I always imagined normal girls all weighted 125 or something. It wasn't until I started researching wls and seeing all these normal looking girls in their after pictures at 160, 170 etc... that I realized I probably looked NORMAL back when I was 165. Just tells you how many bad messages we get about what we should weigh.,
