Aspirin vs tylenol
Okay can someone please tell me why we're not supposed to take aspirin or ibuprofin? Other than the fact that most doctors say it's a no-no. I want to know the specific why's.
The reason I ask : I have a migraine. Tylenol does diddly squat to fix it. I'm allergic to aleve and vicodin is too strong (not to mention the fact that it's at home and I'm not). Pre-op, I would take excedrin migraine, but it has acetometaphine (tylenol) and ibuprofin and caffiene.
Honestly....I took it. Now, someone tell me....are my innards going to implode because I took something my doctor said to avoid?

I heard the same thing...
Jenny - I also was told that there's a danger of post-op ulcers from using ibuprofen. At the patient education seminar I went to before surgery, they said this is an issue because the pouch is much smaller than a regular stomach and produces much less acid, so there isn't as much gastric juice to counteract the corrosive nature of ibuprofen. I agree with you, though -- I find that Tylenol isn't nearly as effective as ibuprofen, especially when it comes to stuff like muscle pain. Advil was always my pain reliever of choice, but now taking Tylenol instead, I need four or five doses over the course of two days to deal with pain that that one dose of Advil would have knocked out in a couple of hours. <SIGH> Just another of the little trade-offs from GBP...

I'm wondering if it makes a difference taking liquid ibuprofen over the pills, as it wouldn't be sitting in the pouch nearly as long.... ? God, I hope so...

Stacy, that's a really good question and I didn't even think about the liquid version! I have a post-op appointment this afternoon and will ask my NP if she knows. My suspicion is that she'll say no ibuprofen regardless of form, but I would be totally psyched to hear I could use the liquid stuff! Tylenol is good for period cramps, but it sucks for muscle aches.

Maybe there is a reason you are having Migranes
I hope you have spoke with your doctor about the migranes. DO you have blood pressure concerns your doctor may have something that can help and not cause a stomach ulcer. Just a thought tis all and not ment to be condesending in any manner.

Nope, didn't speak to anyone. I have a rare diabetes and my medication for that is a nasal spray that has been known to cause migraines. My endocrinologist knows about it, but has never said what to take for it. I don't have cronic migraines, just every now and then. And with the weekend I had, I'm lucky I'm up and moving rather than lying in bed still.
I seriously doubt that taking excedrin once in the past year and a half is going to cause serious damage right this moment. So since it's now been almost 4 hours since I took it, I'm going to assume that implosion of my innards is not about to occur.

Take some tums or something
Jen,
We can take NSAIDS when we're further post-op, every once in a while, without doing tremendous damage (according to my surgeon). I took Mobic (a COX-2 inhibitor, but similar to NSAIDS) for my knee pain every single day until about a month ago, and never had a problem, but I've also been on Prevacid since the first day post-op. If you can, do something to keep the acid production in your stomach down, Tums or something, to diminish the chance of ulcers as much as possible. If you ever had an ulcer pre-op, it would be more worrisome, I would think.
A potential ulcer down the road or a present migraine? I'd take the dang Excedrin Migraine, too! Just protect yourself as much as possible, and as you know (yada, yada, yada) if the migraines get chronic, try to see a doc and get a prescription for Nexium or Prevacid so you can take what you need.
