My journey
began several years ago. I asked my pcp about it and they said nope...we moved to TEXAS a few months later and saw the base about the sugery. I was put in their program and after 6 monts of testing I was approved for their program. However one month later I was told they were changing their guidelines and not doing sugery on anyone with over 55 BMI. Since it was a military installation they figured that under 55 BMI have the best results and they only get to do about 4-5 cases per month so they wanted to have the best results possible. I tried losing the weight and was so close but was told the wait was up to 1+ years....ugh, more waiting and trying to keep the weight off was difficult already. I soon gained it all back plus some and was sad, angry and frustrated. After a while I decided to go back to my PCP and explain my situation and see if they could refer me off base and after several months trying they did. I went to see my dr and he said i was a candidate and started my testing again since most of my stuff was done more than a year before...well after most of my testing was done my dr left the practice and I was switched to another dr. This dr didn't like my BMI and wanted me to lose 20lbs before he would operate. I lost 35 and on April 9th I had my sugery.
I was also having a ventral hernia repair so I had to have the open RNY. They fixed my hernia and actually found a 2nd one. The base told me they were just pockets of fat and they didn't think they were hernias...UGH! Anyways...Everything went well the day of surgery. Don't remember much. Untill I was taken to ICU (because I am on CPAP). I was only supposed to be there one day. They took such good care of me there. I had a morphine pump and could just push the button when ever I needed it. I didn't like it thought cause it knocked me out and groggy and WICKED DREAMS close to hallucinations. I had a couple of Sexy nurses too so that was nice... I was up and walking the second day after sleeping through most of the first. I stayed in the ICU 2 days since no other room was available for me. They pulled both tubes out of my nose on the second day....YEAH...that sucked! I had two JP drains and they drained good so one was removed on day 2 and the 2nd was removed on day 3. I walked a lot and was finally moved to a regular room and wished I could stay in ICU....regular room sucked. I had a roomate who seemed to be right off of the Jerry Springer Show. Her and her boyfriend were fighting when we first came in there...I was actually scared for a bit. ONce he left things were fine and she just cursed up a storm and was jonesing for drugs every 5 mins. On day 3 I stopped taking all pain meds cause I just don't like the way they make me feel. I am sore but it's not too bad if I don't over do it. My husband has actually been heaven sent! He give me showers and helps do things I just can't do. I was on stage one diet clear liquids only days 2 and 3. Day 4 I was changed to full liquids. It tasted so good. I am scared to push my pouch so i just eat a little and try to sip my water all day. I have been really gasey lately...I hope this is normal. I got to come home on Day 5 and am happy to be in my own bed and with my family. My son has been kinda scared of me since but my daugher has been like a 2nd nurse and nurturing me like crazy. I don't know how much weight I have lost but can't wait to see on my first post op appt on the 24th. Anyways....just wanted to share my jouney and thank you all for you love and support, your prayers while I was in the hospital. I am so glad I have found this site and you guys as well. When I start losing I will post my before and after pics.
