It's so weird...
I find it so strange how different surgeons prescribe different diets for patients at the same post-op stage. My surgeon must be really conservative -- I'm 7 weeks post-op and I'm still on soft foods for the most part. At my last post-op check-up about a week and a half ago, they gave me my "next stage" diet, which was really the same thing I've been eating with the addition of shaved deli turkey and 97% fat-free ham (neither of which I tolerate very well) and canned chicken and tuna. I had a little bit of hamburger the weekend before my check-up, and the nurse practitioner basically reamed me out about it, saying that was "stupid", as I should be avoiding meat until 3 months post-op. Well, thanks a lot for letting me know -- they never said that! In fact, they never gave me much of a detailed diet at all, just basic guidelines, but I've downloaded really detailed post-op diets online, the best of which I think was from the Cleveland Clinic, with sample meals, quantities, etc., none of which my surgeon provided.
I had almost no problems in the early weeks after surgery, but as I've been adding more stuff back into my diet, I've started to have problems with vomiting and nausea. One big issue that's surfacing for me is (apparently) lactose intolerance, which I never had before surgery. Most of the time when I try to drink milk, I have what I've been calling "baby spit" -- this mucus-y crap that I choke up nearly immediately after swallowing a mouthful. One of my co-workers who had the surgery 10+ years ago suggested I started using Lactaid tablets, and that seems to help a bit, but when a big part of my diet is made with milk, the vomiting has been an issue. I can't wait to be able to eat more regular stuff!!
