Default Juice and Coffee

How long did you wait to start drinking juice or cofee (starbucks). I am really scared of trying anything and haven't really been eating the way that I should.

PS I was just released from the hospital yesterday. Was in a week and found out that I have an ulcer. Just another complication. I really don't want to go back in again.

But Before I went in I had this thing for citrus-oranges. Now I am I really craving some lime/lemonade.

I'm not in the medical field, but I'm pretty sure citrus is not going to be on your list of acceptable food/beverages. When I was diagnosed with GERD they had me avoid citrus, tomato-based foods, caffiene, sodas, etc. They do have an orange juice that has reduced acid, but still... Also, there's a new coffee on the market with reduced acidity. Did your doctor give you any guidelines of what to eat?

Good luck and hopefully a medical person will be by soon with some helpful advice.

I started drinking Crystal Lite Lemonade from day 1 - and still doing it. As far as coffee, I waited a month or so, now I drink Starbuck SF Lattes daily....

and I have been eating an occasional orange since a few months post op.

After a year, I still haven't done juice. Not the best choice for us. Coffee I did about a week after surgery.

Crystal light, propel, herbal tea, regular tea, bottled water I did the first week.

Any regular juice has more sugar than is advisable for quite a while after surgery.

I know this is obvious but coffee is terrible for ulcers. My doc said "light" juice is fine, especially for a change. A person can get sick of water or crystal light. I started drinking light apple juice at 5 months out (recently). It's allright in moderation. I guess it all depends on your doc/nutritionist.

I tried decaf ... ugh. I don't know if it's the coffee, the powedered creamer or the non-suger sweetener - but after 2 trys .. I had to let it go.

I would not try orange or any citrus juice at all. That is the main thing that irritants your stomach lining.

Now and then I crave a glass of OJ ... then it passes.

I never have rice, breads, pasta etc.. though I can have a small potato.

On another front I tried one of my favorite chinese take outs - Shrimp. veggies and fried rice. The shrimp was great of course, the veggies were ummm okay - but those chinese veggies are too fiborous I think .. but the fried rice was WHACKED on my little pouch. Nooit meer (Never again). AND today, for the first time since my surgery, I have swollen fingers! See? That darn chinese food never does me any good.

Default eat the fruit itself

Yeah, I have to chime in on the fruit thing. I still don't drink fruit juice - just too much sugar in one place. You can eat the fruit itself and get more benefit. Crunchy pears are wonderful, but I still have to peel them at a year and a half out. Regarding coffee, my doc insisted on no caffeine for a month, but after that, it's up to us. I drink a couple of cups of coffee a day, and have since I was just a little over a month out from surgery. Marie's right - you'll get 20 different answers on the coffee issue. I think if you're subject to ulcers, you need to be even more careful, unfortunately. And even decaf coffee causes reflux.

Bella - we weren't allowed rice until we were six months out--the body struggles with rice. Even then, I still don't eat fried rice. We don't need "fried" anything. I'd rather have it steamed or boiled, and still make sure I eat it with some kind of sauce, or with lowfat milk and Splenda as a kind of dessert. And that's very seldom, even so.
