Default Post op have your tastes changed and how much you are willing to spend on one meal?

Tonight as I was picking up a few things for dinner it occurred to me...I shop completely different than I did before. Now I am sure all of you are saying "well duh", but let me go into more detail. Yes I buy food differently, gone are the oven fries and chicken tenders and hot pockets. they have been replaced with frozen chicken breasts, ind cups of green beans, frozen broccoli and cheese and even pre made salads, premade raw shihkabobs that you take home and cook and stuffed pork chops (I only buy one at a time lol). Pre op I wanted the most "bang for my buck" so salads didn't fit that catagory.

I was just wondering if others are more willing to shell out money for less food. I am pondering this as I enjoy a feta stuffed mushroom it is delicious (and not even deep fried).

Right now I am willing to pay more for an individual frozen South Beach Diet frozen meal... but it is lasting me 3-4 meals.

Haha Marie... that's too funny!

It's a sad reality that healthier food is way more expensive than the "bad for you" foods... the individual items that hubby and I buy now are more expensive than the stuff we used to get, but since I can only eat such small amounts, we buy less food overall, so I think it balances out.

When I eat out at restaurants, I'm only willing to order a "whole" meal if it's something that will reheat well, like meatloaf or something. Things like fish and chicken breast do not seem to agree with my pouch after they've been microwaved, and if I can't get multiple meals out of it, it's just not worth ordering-- either I custom-order something, or I have a couple of bites of hubby's meal if it's something I can eat.

I can almost never reheat anything! I have found that if I get my steak rare then I can reheat it okay and I can reheat a baked potato. Meatloaf and chopped steak works too as does a hamburger patty. Chicken and fish just aren't happening in the microwave! I waste more food that I have ever wasted in my entire life, but I try not to look at it that way. You are paying for your meal. Just enjoy it and eat what you're supposed to eat of it. Either take the rest home to reheat or leave it on your plate. I'm getting much more comfortable leaving it lately! Grocery shopping is another story! I HATE it! I never know what to buy because what I want now will not be what I want tomorrow. DH gets frustrated with me in the grocery store because I always take so long to decide what to buy and we're spending more on groceries because we're shopping healthier. Healthier is a good thing, more money is not!

Personally I find myself cleaning out the mini-fridge I have in my room on a monthly basis and throwing out near-rotten food all the time. It's not really my fault, it's way hard finding individual-like servings of the foods that I "can" eat and once I have something I don't really "feel like it" until way later and by the time I want it again, it's too late.

My tastes have most definitely changed. About three weeks ago my dad ordered himself a three-cheese calzone from the pizza place below our apartment(yes, we live on top of a pizza place, next to it is an ice cream place, on the other side there's an italian restaurant, across the street is Tony Romas and on the side of that there's a Ruby Tuesday's and a Bucca Di Peppo...ain't that lovely???) and when it was delivered I was just staring at him eating it *lol*. Remembering how that used to be one of my favorite foods, he told me to eat some and I was like 'NO!'. I couldn't stop thinking about the damn calzone so in the middle of the night I opened the microwave, took it out and decided to take a bite and get it over with. When I bit into it, it was just about the most disgusting thing I'd ever tasted. All I could feel were the greasy juices all over my tongue and lips, I gagged. I didn't even swallow the piece, I spit it out, put the calzone back in the microwave and brushed my teeth like three times and I still could not get the greasiness out of my mouth. It was totally gross. Another food that I used to eat by the cans was SPAM *lol*. I used to steal them from my mom, get a fork, take it to my room and eat away...now, I tried one bite and it was aweful! Nowadays I can not get enough of broccoli, cauliflower, grape tomatoes and fat-free/sugar-free stuff...I never thought that'd be the case, but amazingly...it is!

Money wise, I'm soooooo cheap lol. I have only gone to Taco Bell since the surgery. One time I got their pintos & cheese and ate like a quarter of it but since my dad paid for it, it was no biggie. The other time I got their tiny bowl of cheesy fiesta potatoes and ate half of it. I was pissed that I had to throw the rest away since I was the one that paid for it(even though it was a dollar lol) and the other time I got a cheese quesadilla and ended up eating only a quarter of it and once again I was pretty upset that I had to discard the rest. I refuse to go anywhere else like McDonalds and Wendy's because I know their meals are going to cost me 3-4+ dollars and I'm only going to have like a taste so...what's the point?

I haven't eaten fast food restaurant in over a year. I did drive through and get the kids (3 and 5) happy meals 2 times in the past year. They think it's such the treat!!

I tend to be a cheap cheap date when eating out. I always order water (which I don't drink) and something small like a cup of chili or my fave . .. sushi. Now, I can eat more sushi than expected . . . maybe 4 rolls - so I always share with someone. I don't get a salad or crackers or bread . .. we do have an awesome super thin crust pizza place . . . since I'm over a year out and at my goal I do have have a piece of pizza every now and then. I stick to one piece and that's it.

For dinner, I have to cook for hubby and kids - so I make pretty healthy meals, but usually don't eat like we used to. I was a portion control problem person - if we had pasta or rice, I FILLED up!! Now, I only eat of bit of carbs . . . sushi is my vice when it comes to carbs!!

I certainly don't want a lot of foods I used to love - like sandwiches . .. I loved a good Philly Cheesesteak or a Spicy Chicken sandwich from Wendy's. I could eat a footlong seafood sub from Subway or a WHOLE Quizno's club . . . no more. I can't eat bread very well . . . I feel bloated and YUCK immediately . .. I no longer even WANT to eat that way.

Geesh, I could go on and on . . . but I won't.

I'll end in saying - I love Balance 100 c bars and Pria 110 bars . . . they are my snacks . . . the only candy I have now . . . I used to LOVE candy.

It is interesting that we have a problem "wasting" food....I considered it a waste when you stick it to your hips and then need the various surgeries to get it off You should see how much is thrown away at the resturants!

There was an article I read once that there's a conspircany to keep poor people at the bottom by keeping unhealthy food inexpensive to buy with food stamps. The author figured that the poor would die off quicker if they have access to useless food. Of course, that idea would back fire because of the healthcare costs to treat the ilnesses that arise and when people use the ER as a clinic for every ailment.

Don't waste that was a common quip in my house as a child. I bite my tongue when I want to say it to my daughter. If she has leftovers from something it goes into a yogurt container for later, if it is more than a bite or too, this helps me to not finish it myself. Or I scrape it straight into the trash.

I don't know if it is a conspiracy or not to kill off poor people. I know that oranges are 1.98 a lb (thats what 3 oranges?) and a bag of doritos is 1.99. Lean chicken breast is 7.00 a pack. Chicken nuggests are way below that.

This was way funny because right before I sat down to read on here, I did my dishes, emptied the dishwasher and looked into the fridge and started cleaning...Wasted lots of items that went right into the garbage. My husband gets more upset about it then I do. If it was up to me I would just chuck it after dinner because I know I am never going to eat it and with his job by the time he comes home it is garbage anyways but for the sake of his sanity I save it and throw it away later. I throw so much food away that I could food half the united states. I must admit that I still cook like I am feeding an army but never eat it like that. It is something I am working on. As I sit here and type I am eating a chicken&Brocolli pot pie took 3 bites and the rest to the garbage. Yeah it probably does cost me a ton of money on groceries that go in the garbage but oh well. I hate grocery shopping now, I can remember before surgery I would walk up and down every aisle..hmm what looks good, now I am in and out because rarely do things look good to me. As far as eating out, I order what I want and eat what I can and chuck the rest.

My tastes have definetly changed since surgery. I remember before surgery I loved pancakes and eggs and bacon...Now I have a hard time even looking at them...Grosses me right out..I have so many more I could list but oh yea my taste have changed!
