Funny, the other week, I wanted watermelon and it cost me 8 bucks...I was sort of mad that I was paying that amount for some fruit...until I thought back 10 weeks ago I would've bought a cake or pie for that same amount and wouldn't complain about it!! I bought some fresh raspberries the other day and spent almost $4 on a small amount....They were good and they replaced the cookies I would've normally bought for that amount! Am I spending more? Not really...I'm just buying differently.

Yes, I spend more money on food now, but its better quality for me and my family. Same in a restaurant...I don't often order appetizers as they are not the quality I want. I order what I want from the regular menu, take the rest home or share with someone else. I had a hard time doing this originally, but now I have no issues with it.
Fruit and Veggies are SO HIGH right now, but compare a $8 head of cauliflower to a $3 bag of chips.

It's sad and pathetic how cheap it is to get fat, and how expensive it is to eat healthy... says alot about our country and why we are more MO than other places... I get pissed when I go shopping and have to spend so much on fresh foods, and meats, especialyl when I end up throwing so much away.
But, such is life - my tastes have TOTALLY changed - I don't do frozen "box foods", at all anymore, they taste like the box to me - don't do bread/sandwiches, like Subway or Quizno's, although if I take half of the breaf off, I can tolerate something in small doses, I suppose - and fried is never happening for me... so I look for proteins, and throw some carbs and veggies in for variety and flavor.
I love reading how healthy alot of us are eating now... it makes me smile.

Well, I agree that I do spend more at the grocery store...but I also don't spend as much as I used to eating out...so I guess it balances out. I used to spend anywhere from $10-$20 a day just eating out...now that I bring my healthy lunch or buy frozen South Beach Diet entrees, I am using the extra money to treat myself...yesterday I went out for a facial & a massage...that felt better then any Cinnabon or Strabucks combined!! We are worth it...we have always been worth it...we just didn't realize it!!

Quality vs. quantity...
You'll find that being further out, you may consider quality of foods over quantity (past desires).
I just had this conversation with my husband, Dad says to Daughter, "Finish what you've put on your plate, eat everything, we can't afford to be wasting food." Okay, I went ballistic. I said to my daughter, if you’re full; throw the rest away, its okay. This was over Milk = $3.00 gallon. He drinks a gallon-a-day himself, but can totally maintain. Always has, always will, I guess.
I was raised in the "clean your plate club", based on my parents being raised during the depression. I'm hoping to break this cycle with my daughter to protector her from the discrimination/humiliation/ridicule/judgment, etc. that I went through.
Quality does cost more, but it is worth every penny.

It's something everyone will have to adjust to. I've only eaten out once so far and it was olive garden. (great place to eat out for the first time huh?) I ordered there appetizer sampler which I believe was $10. I got to eat two stuffed mushrooms and some calamari. My wife loves the place though so I just put it as the cost of the experience. Plus I did have the left overs.
I think it is going to get to the point where people will be calling for congress to mandate the cost of healthier foods.

one thing "hard" about the wls diet post op, is when you are at home you HAVE to make everything! No more quick fixes, well rarely anyways. That was hard for me to adjust to in the beginning, how eating and the family menu got more expensive. But now I look at it like this, its just food. Its function is to nourish my body now, as before I thought alot like you... how do I get more food (nevermind the quality of it) for less $$$$$?
You will adapt, its like Marie stated, you will pay $27 for a meal, eat a fraction of it and not think twice about it. I have been to a $45 Brazilian buffet and the $35 Gospel Brunch at HOB, im okay with eating what i want and feel free but not letting waste control my life. Waste of money, waste of food.....etc.
Free at last, free at last, free at last!!!

I buy better cuts of fish and meats. Instead of a pound rib eye steak...I go for 4 ounces of sea bass or grouper. Our grocery bills are the same, but when we go out to dinner it is much less as one appetizer and one entree is good for both hubby and I.

Well, my choices have changed.
BS (before surgery) everything tasted good - so I'd just wolf it down like nothing.
AS (after surgery) ummm food just isn't so interesting anymore and THANK GOD FOR THAT! Hee hee!
My thing is I find that I throw out a lot of the food that I buy. I'll buy something .. mostly meat and after a sort of partial serving ... I just don't want it any more and have to toss the whole lot.
Tonight I cooked salmon with a small salad on the side. After a couple of bites .. I pitched the whole thing out. Then I went for 1 one of my favorite BS snacks. Strawberries, bananas, and milk for a milkshake - only I added a scoop of dry protien. After a couple of sips .. pitched the whole darn thing as well.
Finally I had about a half cup of chili with extra cheese and 3 crackers.
That was dinner and that did the trick.
The one thing I never tired of is crushed ice with fresh water.
