"store-bought" smoothies
I am going to the mall at lunch to run an errand and there is a Planet Smoothie there. Right after surgery, I got a smoothie there but I was so paranoid of getting sugar that I just got bananas, peanut butter, and what they call their "protein blast." Besides this one, I have yet to try a smoothie that someone else has made because of the fear of hidden sugar. What do ya'll do? There is one on their menu that is strawberries, bananas, and a blast of protein. Should I just bite the bullet and try it or should I try to ask them if anything is sugar-free? I have had strawberries, apples, pineapple, mixed fruit, and bananas with no problem, but these have all been either fresh fruit or the light syrup canned fruits. I have been wanting one of these smoothies because I want something cold and fruity.

Be careful of the strawberries/fruit they use, as some smoothie places use the kind that are sitting in a sugary, gel-like sauce, and they may not be great for you... at my smoothie place, they have nutritional guidelines for every one of their drinks, and I think even for some of the individual ingredients (I can't remember exactly), so maybe you could check out yours to see first.
I started making my own at home, because I know exactly what I am using, and what to expect... also, I save money that way - what I spent on one smoothie bought me a whole box of fresh strawberries...

I ended up just asking the girl that was working. She was knowledgable so I felt safe. They have nutrition information about all their shakes, but it doesn't have grams of sugar. Go figure! Anyway, she said that the strawberries are in syrup. Bummer. I ended up with a blueberry, banana, and mango smoothie with a blast of protein. It tastes pretty good, but still not satisfying the craving I have.
I think what I really want is ice cream. Oh, well. I eat popsicles all the time but haven't tried any of the fat free, sugar free ice creams. Don't want to buy a whole container to find out that I don't like them, plus some of them are still too high in sugar. Sometimes I hate cravings!

Try the Blue Bunny (?) sf ice cream- found it at WalMart. I heard a couple of the other folk here use it. It's pretty good! One little scoop in my Magic Bullet with 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 tbs of DaVinci sf vanilla syrup, (also at WalMart) ff milk. Count it as a liquid, but adds to the protein count. Yum!

I go to Planet smoothie ALL the time.. ok 3 days a week. heh. I go on the days I work out with my personal trainer as on those days I can take in more calories. The best thing to get there is the meal replacement which has 48 grams of protein and its 4 grams of sugar. Its around 300 calories but keep in mind that's a meal. The packet you have them use is called Lean Body and it taste great. I put mine with blueberries, banana and either the strawberry lean body or the vanilla. The drinks are so much easier going down.. just make sure as with anything that you do not over do it. I count my calories and I never go over 1100. But LOVE LOVE planet smoothie. The protein blasts though... do not have that much protein.. around 19 grams I believe. So try the meal replacement! They have an oatmeal smoothie too that I love to get in the mornings!

another thought...
I forgot to add...
Try going as long as you can without taking in all the sugar free items. I know its hard.. but I am here to tell you that the craving WILL pass. At about 5 months out I thought I was going to die without a diet coke.. but I stuck to my guns... and I have gotten past that. I have no more desire what so ever for a diet coke.. and this is coming from a woman who had 3 a day.
I learned something interesting.. our taste buds actually replace themselves every few hours. So what my trainer was telling me is that you may have a craving for something but normally.. this will go away in a few hours if you don't give in. I have tried it and it works.
We have to get in the habit of making good choices and staying away from the things that got us to this place. Sugar free items are not the answer to cravings and not going to help us. For me I said I was going to wait a year before I tried anything like .. diet coke, bread, pasta, mashed potatoes, sugar free ice cream or cookies, and most bad carbs. Now as that year is growing closer.. I am going to make another goal which is to go another year. Because to be honest with you.. I do not miss any of it.
And I don't mean to be on a soap box .. just throwing this out there!

Thanks, everyone! April, I looked at those more powerful smoothies but I was afraid of how they would taste. I gag over any protein powder that I use to make a shake myself. I had the shake a long time ago and remembered that it wasn't much protein but at least it didn't make me gag!
I like the suggestion of using the Blue Bunny sf ice cream. I'll have to look for that! A milk shake would be really tasty. I would probably use just ice cream and fruit with milk. The milk would add extra protein to whatever is already in the ice cream. I just can't wrap my head around trying to gag down any protein powder at this time. The thought of it still makes me gag a little. That is sad considering it's been over a month since I even tried any, but I just can't get the nastiness out of my head! I can't even drink the ready-to-drink shakes that I used to do. They all just make me want to hurl.

I've looked at the italian ices in our grocery store and they don't have sugar free! I LOVE the regular ones, but way too much sugar in them for now! Are the sugar free ones the Luigi brand or some other brand? I need to find these! They sound SO GOOD! Plus, wouldn't an italian ice just count like a popcicle? One can hope!
