I have a doctor that does 3 meals a day and no snacks until at goal. I never really get hungry and never full, so I measure out food. I do enter things into fitday here and there and usually under 1000 calories from food and then add in protein drinks to make up more. I take my fluids between meals which do contain some calories - ie: hot cocoa.

I didn't have many simple carbs - crackers, trisket and such for a long time, and not in the first few months at all.

Some people need to eat 6 times a day to get in enough food, others not...so its really an individual thing. If you want to boost yourself, increase calories for a few days, then cut back down to 3 meals and no snacks...it will boost the weight loss. Also you could cut out the simple carbs and increase water.

I Eat 3 Times A Day . And I Have At Least 1 Or 2 Shakes (actually 1 Shake Divided In Half) Or Cups Of Milk A Day . I Also Have Coffee , Even Though They Say Not To. And Of Course Water (not Nearly Enough Though) . Im Lucky If I Get In 1000 Calories A Day. I Get In A Little More Calories In When I Take The Protein Vials . Have To Make A Run To Gnc .

I eat three times a day. I will have a protein for a snack if I am working out that day (need the extra energy). I do not count calroies, but do maintain at least 100 grams of protein per day...

Obviously you should not be grazing all day, and right after surgery it can be d*mn near impossible to take in all the protein and water you need, but by a couple of months after surgery, you NEED to be getting in at least 800 calories a day, or else your body goes into starvation mode: that means it thinks it WON'T be getting enough in to fuel your system, so your metabolism (i.e., fat-burning mechanism) slows down and you slow/stop losing weight.

It seems paradoxical, but you really DO need to eat in order to lose weight.

I think the "three meals a day, no more no less" advice is to get us out of the habit of snacking all day long, which (for most of us) is what got us fat in the first place. But if you are only able to get in 100-200 calories per meal, DO THE MATH-- it just isn't enough. You have to put in an extra protein "snack," or protein shake, or something. It's just a fine line between THAT, and going back to munching on unhealthy stuff... anyone who says surgery is the "easy way out" should be burned with hot pokers!!

Starvation mode is what we go through for the year... or at least the first 6 months. Thats why its called rapid weightloss. When you are with your nutritionist, just nod your head in agreement. She is coaching you like you are on a normal diet to maintain loss through reduction of calories. Dont focus on calories, just the protein, water and veggies. While we are losing weight, our fat that we are losing is absorbed and nourishes the body as well. Like I said before, worry about the calories when you are in the maintenance stage, or you want to gain back some pounds.

You know that is a good point. I dont know why I am so stuck on calories. I guess because my nutrionist was like "you only eat 800 calories a day!"

I will keep my focus on protein, water, vita, and exercise.

I also think that through this whole process, I really want to stay healthy and have energy. I will back off of the whole calorie thing and see what happens.

Thanks

My only addition is if you are eating 1200 calories, you need to be getting about 40-50% of your calories in the form of protein. At your stage I was at about the 800 calorie range with 90 g of protein (all from food...no shakes) I counted everything from the milk I put into my coffee to bites, licks, and tastes. Log it all into fitday.com. Maybe you think you are taking in that much, but in reality it is a bit more and the wrong composition.

Default Up date!

After 3 weeks stick in the dreaded plateau.....I lost 5 pounds this week! That was so depressing! I switched things up some. I did not eat every 2 hours, instead, I ate 3 meals, all protien and a small nibble of a snack if I felt I needed to. I did not keep track of calories at all. I think I was eating too much. Also, I did not exercise as much. I dont know if my body needed a break with exercising or what. I feel so good at 185, I can not imagine how I will feel once I loose another 43 pounds!
Also, it has been written on this forum about people not noticing your weight loss. Well finally after loosing 57 pounds people are starting to talk! Man that was a long time waiting for a compliment. Remember, I am one who has not told anyone in town about my wls. (another reason I do not have a photo posted). So thanks for all your support, here's to another 43 pounds!

I was told by my Doc 3 meals a day, mostly protein, then veges, salad, or fruit. I am hardly ever hungry, food just doesnt have the same appeal as it used to (cant imagine why ) I never count calories since I know I am not taking in that many, I concentrate on my protein count and water. As long as I am getting those in proper amount and my vitamins I havent had a problem. Wish you much luck.
