Default Seeking info about "he11 week"...

I have been reading and reading posts on here for a few weeks, and I would really appreciate some detailed feedback about the first week post-op... I had assumed that the pain would be comparable to a different Laparoscopic procedure I had for female issues a few years ago...which was mostly pain-free.

From what I have been reading on here, the first week was really painful for alot of you, and I am wondering if is exterior pain at the multiple incision sites, or do your insides hurt from all the new construction?

Thanks!

Rachel

Different people will answer this question in different ways. For me, the pain was actually not as bad as I expected. Yes there was pain, but it was not excrutiating. In the hospital, I used the pain pump until they took it away. After they took it away, I found that I didn't really need it. After I was discharged, I only took one of the pain pills I was prescribed and that was just because I couldn't get comfortable to get to sleep the first night. After that, I never even took another one! Everyone's experience in this regard, however, is different so it's hard to predict.

yea, I agree with tonya the pain and discomfort is not the big issue. For me it was an overwhelming, what the heck did I do to myself. Remember you will be not eating anything but a bit of broth and jello, no nutrition for a week or so and then its not much more. Starvation, even if it is without hunger, can cause you to feel yucky......I had my gallbladder out too and I think that made me fill icky.

Default Piece of Cake!!

Well, I used the pain pump at the hospital only because it was there when I woke up. Once I was discharged, I had no need for pain medication or even Tylenol! Then again, I have had 3 kids (naturally), 1 tonsil removal, 1 gall bladder removal, and 1 nose job...I have built up some pain tolerance. Don't worry about it...everything that is worth having is worth working for!! No pain...no gain?

My insides were very sore as well. It was bearable up until bedtime. I could only lay on my back and even that felt uncomfortable. The pain meds helped. I dont think for anyone the pain was out of control, its very manageable with medication.

Default Pain was controlled through medication

I do have a funny reaction to Stadol, the nasal spray pain reliever they gave me. Made me totally psychotic. The worst pain was internal, on the left side, where most of the instruments go in. That took much more than a week to feel anywhere close to normal. Took me three weeks to sleep anywhere but a recliner. Everyone's different, though.

let me see if I can add my story here to help you. I am actually at the end of "hell wek" right now and must admit it was HELL!!! But, only hell for the first 3-4 days. After that things start returning to semi-normal. I had to wiping problem another descrieb as it was painful to do it. I also have the icky feelings and that "what the hell did I do to myself" thoughts as well.

I think that the worst pain was the first two days after surgery. That was a combo of incision pain and inside pain (ver hard to describe that one!! kind of a dull and tuggin thuddy type pain).

The third day was a bit better, but not a huge amount. I got to go home on Day 4. In addition, I was getting out of bed on my own and walking more freely and not asking for pain meds.

Luckily fo rme, I was able to sleep laying down completely on my back. I did have pillows under my knees to help with the pressure and that is something I did not think I would be able to do form reading the posts on this board.

Every day thereafter has been better and better.. I went out today for the first time and it felt so good. I drove down to the bariatric center at the hospital and they weighed and me we talked for a while and I went back home. I was drained of course, but hey! I love it..

If anyone had told me last Thursday i would feel this good, I would have hit them in the head with a hammer.. However, I did exactly what my doctor said and here I am!!

Hoep this helps out some

I didnt have pain except the first days after surgery, it seemed each day after I felt better than the previous. I never took pain meds when I came home, even after I ended up with an infection in my umbilical incision. I also had those days when I would sit and cry thinking what did I do!!!!, but thats normal, even though your not hungry you still mourn for your food. I had got to one point I just had to chew something, so I popped a cracker in my mouth chewed and spit it out, I was fine after that. The more active you stay after surgery the better you will feel. Good luck to you.

Recliner for me also, about 3 weeks. But I came home with two drains, because I had a leak. Pain was high, and I have had my gall bladder out with lap and this hurt worse. I have also had back surgery thru my front and this hurt worse, but only till the drains came out. And yes I used the pain meds. glad I had them. Tim
