Will I be able to tolerate
a weekend get a way trip 4 weeks after having lap RNY? I don't have a surgery date scheduled but have lots of trips planned this summer and I was just trying to figure out what would afford me the best recovery.
Thanks for your input!

I could have definitely tolerated a weekend trip 4 weeks post surgery. I went back to work 2 weeks post-op, so a trip would have been a nice relaxing break! By 4 weeks out, my strength was coming back as long as I got my protein in and I was starting to have more energy from dropping the weight. I would say go for it! and good luck with getting your date!

You should be fine...I was still very tired at 4 weeks out and very much learning new eating habbits at that point. If your just relaxing and nothing too "active"...I say have a blast. You will know what you can and can not tolerate as you recover.
Have fun traveling~

I am 2 and a half weeks out right now and I feel like I could easily go for a weekend trip... in fact if any of you would like to take care of my three munchkins I am going to plan one
You will be fine just pay close attention to eating while you are vacationing. Have fun!

I wish my experience would have been as bright and shiny as you guys! I felt like cold dog poop at 4 weeks out. I wouldn't have enjoyed doing ANYTHING. I would have been totally miserable. My bowels were a wreck and I couldn't ride in a car from having a severe upset stomach. I never left the security of my bathroom at home for weeks and weeks unless it was a 15 minute drive down the road. I was so tired I just wanted to sleep. I couldn't eat because I had a stricture that had to be dilated AND I had an ulcer that kept me throwing up when I tried to eat. So, maybe if it were not for all of the factors added in for me it would have been easier, but at 4 weeks I really don't think I could have even went back to work if my job was not a work-from-home type of job. I also had lap and not open. So I guess I wasn't normal.

For me it would be definitely with one point. Get a fridge in your room where you are staying. Bring string cheese, cottage cheese etc. Things you know you will tollerate and get your protein in. Eating out well is hard at that stage. I find I don't allow myself excuses when on vacation. I eat right and I feel better for it. It is now about the location and the people, not the food.

I felt physically well enough at 4 weeks to go just about anywhere, but I WAS still awfully tired at that stage-- I was back to work, but by the end of the day I was POOPED. I was also a little nervous to be TOO far away from home due to the risk of complications in the first 6-8 weeks-- you know, prime time for a stricture and such. If you start to feel bad, you can go downhill pretty quickly!
I second what Dyann said about having a fridge in your room and bringing along foods you can eat. At 4 weeks, there is very little in most restaurants that you can have, with the possible exceptions of soups, but many of those are not pureed and/or lowfat. If you plan to spend a lot of time on the road/in the air, you should also bring a small cooler with stuff you can have for snacks/protein drinks/etc.

Trip
I hate to admit it, but I went away for the weekend the week after surgery. It was just a 'relax' thing, and I packed my jello and broth, but I am always on the go. I was much slower and did have to think more before I went away, especially about packing food because Dyann is right, it's very hard to eat out.
