Is this indigestion?
Hi all,
I have a question. I am 2 weeks post op. I ate some turkey meat loaf last night that may have been a little too dry. I have been feeling a bit like I have indigestion. I am hoping nothing is stuck. How can I tell and will this pass in time?
I ate about 1 or 2 ounces.
Thanks
Rain

No Meat
Rain,
I don't think you are supposed to eat meat at this stage, but I can be wrong. I have a feeling your pouch is telling you that you did a no-no!! Your first experience of what keeps you honest.. It's all trial and error.. anything dry will not set well for most folks.. so keep your eye out for dry meats.. chicken is really tricky.. Good luck to you!!

at 2 weeks out i don't think you're supposed to be eating that. you should be eating very soft foods. i would call the office if it doesn't go away. something could be stuck. the opening at this point is so small that's why you're supposed to have basically mush at this point.

Even with soft foods, you still have to chew well. I find meatloaf in any form a bit too heavy to digest well. This won't be the last time it happens. You will feel this way again if you eat too much, or too fast, or you don't chew well enough. As aforementioned, it's trail and error!

thanks all,
At the nutrition class last week and the litrature Kelly handed out allows for ground or chopped meats. I thought it would be o.k. but I'm a thinkin' not!
Anyway, I am back on liquids and they are going down fine, I'll make sure I have mushier foods for a bit longer. I am also eating crispy foods per Kelly's class, any thing I should know about that?

Ground, chopped meat ... not meatloaf!
I think what they mean is stuff like potted meat, deviled ham, etc. These are soft and don't hold together, and dissolve in liquid. They go down easily; you can try chewing them, but they are so mushy there's not much you can do to make them softer than they already are.
Meatloaf is tough - you do have to chew it, and it's made with binders to keep it solid enough to slice, so it's nothing like the above meats at all. Avoid it until 6 weeks or later, and then only take tiny bites and wait to see how it goes down. Some people tolerate this and other meats okay, a lot don't for a long time.
Hang in there!
Phil

What Phil said.
At this point in your recovery, it's potted meats.

...and SPAM does not qualify as POTTED MEAT. It's too tough, contains gristle, huge amounts of salt, and who knows what part of the pig it's made from...

o.k. o.k. I get it now!!
Thanks all,
I am clear on the chopped meats. Never knew of such types of meats before. Do not think I can palette them so I am filling up on protein shakes, cheese, yogurt, beans and soft mushy fruits.
I am feeling well, so I guess I did not harm myself.
Thank you for your input!!
