Default If no NSAIDS, what do you take for pain??

I see lots of posts stating that NSAIDS are a no-no, and my surgeon (my new one) agreed, and then prescribed me Vicodin ES (which is partly acetominophen, correct?) What's up with that?

Uh oh, getting my pains in the abdomen as I type this... freaking out, gotta go...

Alright, I am back.

See, as quickly as that, they come on and within 5-7 minutes they're gone...

Here's what's happening with me - had these episodes of pain, along with the gall bladder pain (under rib cage on right) and they took it out on the 12th. BUT, since the surgery I have had more episodes of this center upper abdominal pain that radiates thru to my back. VERY HARSH.

So, back to the doctor, after them saying, maybe bad gas? Another ultrasound and more labs today, because my liver levels were high, and they weren't prior to surgery... he thinks either a stone is floating around, or an ulcer. I am concerned because it's in the same spot EVERY time... when I get my results tomorrow, I will know if it's that, or I have to have an endoscopy to see what's what. Which scares me. But he's a GBS surgeon here in NOLA (mine moved to Baton Rouge after Katrina, and the drive, traffic and wait time was awful). Anywho, I will write back with what they found, in case anyone else has these issues and they ever want to do a search on these things, as I have done when I had questions in the past.

It pisses me off, because for the whole year after my surgery, I have been feeling sooo good, and now this crap. Okay, I am done. Going to bed. Thanks for listening/reading. Love y'all.

Well in answer to one of your questions, yes vicodin has acetaminophen (tylenol) in it, but while it is an analgesic, it is not classified as an NSAID. NSAIDS (naproxen, ibuprofen, asprin) work specifically by reducing inflammation and are discouraged because they increase the risk of stomach ulcers. In regards to over the counter medications, Tylenol is a better choice for gastric bypass patients because it does not have the level of risk for ulcers that the NSAIDS do, but you need to be careful in the dosage because it can cause liver damage in high amounts.

It sounds like your doctor is on top of things, I hope you get an answer to what is causing the pain and start to feel better soon!
