Thanks for all your replys. I have to confess, I'd never looked at it as a positive thing. It's opened my eyes a bit.

I am still pre-op.. and I was thinking the lap-band was right for me, and did extensive research on it. I can say the #1 reason I switched to RNY is the dumping.. I eat too many sweets (more and more the bigger I got). I HOPE I dump.. that being said, the second reason I switched my thinking was the rate of re-surgeries. I only want one! Too many slippings, erosions!(ICK), and changes into RNY's. Just my opinion tho.. you need your own list of pro's & Cons. GOOD LUCK! Keep us posted on your decision??

When I originally started researching this whole process, I was totally against RNY. I was going to get the lap band or nothing. As I did more and more research and had my initial consultation with my surgeon, he asked me my reasons for not wanting RNY. My two biggies were I didn't want to have my insides re-routed and I didn't want to dump. He explained both in such a way that they both seem like a good thing! Particularly dumping. I know a lot of people who are banded. Many of them have done wonderful, but some haven't. Being banded takes a LOT more self discipline because you can still eat those candies and cookies and not get sick. Heck, I had one friend who almost lived on ice cream and wondered why she wasn't lossing. With the RNY, you have the added incentive to not eat the fatty, sugary foods. Yes, if you really realy want that piece of chocolate you can have it, but will it make you sick? I am only 2 months out and I haven't dumped yet. I have only eaten maybe one or two things that I shouldn't have eaten, though, and that is because of the threat of dumping! I know that I would not have been as successful as I have been if I would have been banded instead of having the RNY. Of course, I have a Fobi pouch so I do have a little band in there, it's just not adjustable and it's around the stoma. Good luck in your decision!

I am with the people who have had a mild dump, with a rapid heartbeat, kind of disoriented feeling, and overall yuckiness - the threat of that feeling puts me off of high carb, high fat, fried foods, and too much sugar. I can have most things in small doses, which is why I am happy I did RNY instead of LAP BAND. I researched both, too, and found this was a better option for me. I am thrilled I did it, and happy that I "dump".

Good luck with your decision - either way, it's a major surgery and you have to change your ways.
