Talking All Post-Op' ers

Hello all!
I have to say that these boards have provided me some of the best information on gastric bypass that I can findon the net. Nothing like getting the information from those that have actually had the procedure done.

I wanted to ask...since my surgery date will be in April sometime....
Could you give me an idea of what it will be like afterwards. I know that its a liquid diet for a few weeks, correct? Im just interested in knowing.

Thanks!
Sharon

You'll have your liquid phase, your puree stage, and the stage where you slowly introduce foods back in. Each doc is different with his/her requirements, so check with yours as some docs have you on clears in the very beginning too.

Also, you may be a little emotional at week three-ish (this varies for everyone, and some don't even experience it), some have a decrease in energy until their bodies figure out what Mack truck hit them, and some sail through. Take everything in stride, post here...we are here for you, and you will do fine WELCOME!

Yes, I remember having broth and decaf tea in the hospital. When I was home I went to cream soups, jello, sf popsicles, protein shakes, etc. Very small amounts of course. I hate cream soups now by the way! Haven't touched one since I moved from that phase into soft foods! They will give you a list of foods that are allowed. For me the "diet" went in phases. I can't remember the exact order of it all...I remember liquids/full liquids/pureed foods/mechanical soft/then soft foods/then regular. I think each week went to a new thing. I know by 4-5 weeks I was eating "normal" stuff. Chili and chicken w/stars soup are still my 2 favorite things to eat! Goldfish crackers are my favorite snack! It's very nice to be able to eat a little bit of food and feel satisfied. It's awesome! You will be so excited and feel so good! It takes awhile though. I remember thinking "what have I done?" in the first couple of weeks.... but that feeling passed pretty quickly. Eating really is hard for the first month or so...but keep telling yourself....it will get better...because really, it does!!!

I'm going through my low energy phase right now. Just tire out sooooo easily. Sometimes the energy comes back after a rest and sometimes it doesn't. My food advancement stage was similar to Elaine's: clear liquids for 2-4 meals; full liquids for a week; soft/pureed foods from weeks 2-24 with an advancement towards normal foods as tolerated.

Good luck on your journey!

I am about 2 months out. My progression was about the same as everyone. My doctor never really gave me a guideline. Liquids for 3 weeks was all he said and then progress as tolerated. I needed more than liquids after about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks and moved into a little bit of pureed foods. I need the extra calories that it provided. You will hopefully go over it with your doctor and he will give you guidelines. Keep up with the forum, read it and post with any questions, comments or concerns as well as where you are and what you are doing.
This is a great place for information and I know it has been much easier for me during these last 2 months post op having this forum.

Sharon:
All good advice from my post-op staplers.....one suggestion - if you don't already have it, pick up a copy of "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" - it's a great guide to help you through the different phases. I can't tell you how many times I referred to that book pre-op and early post-op.

But, this board is also a great resource, of course.
