Default Sushi?

At what point were most of you able to eat sushi rolls? I have been getting them for about 2 weeks now, I just eat the insides and discard the rice. I asked for a rice-less roll and the sushi chef looked at me like I had a third eye or something. It's easier to just order the roll and pick the insides out! I thought about ordering sashimi, but I like the veggies and cream cheese. A philly roll is my favorite. I've read that some people eat the brown rice and that some order their rolls without rice. At what point could you eat the brown rice? Right now, I can have 2 oz. of protein and 1 oz. veggies or fruit. When I get my roll, I have been eating the insides of all but one of the pieces. I eat the last piece whole if I still have room. So far *knock on wood* the rice from one piece hasn't caused any trouble. Any sushi fans out there have any suggestions on how to order? I'm not really up on all the terminology so I don't know what the different things are called, but I got a sushi dish in Earth Fare that has pieces of fish over a little clump of rice. Those are easy to eat, but there's no veggies. I like the cucumber and avocado, especially the avocado! With the fish just on the rice, you don't get that like you do in a roll. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I ate sushi from about 4 months out. I can do 3 rolls with the rice. I can do rice now, but couldn't do the first 6 months or so except with the sushi roll. Go figure. I don't eat any white rice except with sushi. Only brown or a mixed 5 rice blend. I keep it in very small amounts and always with protein.

I too asked once for sushi w/o rice and they didn't get it. So I order dynamite or california rolls now, and take some of the rice off the roll - eat the rest. Depends on how they make it. I also found a sushi place that does a tray...I order it with chicken on veggies (cooked) and they have a veggie mix and then some california rolls with it and tempra veggies. For me, its good for 2 meals. Some can't tolerate the deep fried things. I can, but limit how much of this I eat.

I think I waited 6 months, however long Dr Callery told me to stay away from rice is what I did. His dietary suggestions are onthe main page here if you are interested. On thinnertimes.com

I still pick out the innards because the rice hits like a rock for me. It works, though. I love sashimi, too

I first ate sushi about 3 and a half months out. Early in the day I did my protein shake and vitamins and kept well hydrated, BUT I stopped drinking water about an hour before I ate it, because sometimes I get "the foamies". It went down so nice, and I was so happy because I had been craving it. I only had three small rolls of calamari, but I still did it. I think I want some right now.. Yum. Calamari tastes great and goes down good too. I didn't try any spicy tuna or eel, has anyone? I LOVE it, but I didn't want to risk mixing it..

I'm less than two months out and I've only been eating the insides. I tried one piece once and didn't have any trouble from it, but i haven't tried that since because I'm not supposed to. The fish is just so soft and goes down so easy! I like sashimi, but I also like a combination and I can pretty much only eat the insides of one roll at this point. I got a rainbow roll at one place the other day and couldn't even eat all of the insides of that one. It was huge! Well, huge for me at least. I think I'll continue what I've been doing and just get my sushi and eat the inside of the roll. One place I go actually does have a rice-less roll, but it is only crab meat and avacado wrapped in cucumber. I like the salmon, the tuna, and the eel with avacado and cucumber. Some combination of those are what I usually eat but I wanted to try to mix it up a little. From what ya'll are saying, sounds like I should definately wait before getting any more adventurous! Thanks for the input!

I have not tried any sushi or sashimi yet. We lived in Okinawa Japan for about 3 years and I absolutely love sushi and sashimi. Here in Germany we don't have many choices for either. I know in Japan and I have seen some in the US as well they have sushi style rolls that are made from some kind of cabbage leaves. Very similar to a spring roll.
Since Sushi is technically the rice portion of the roll, the waiters may not understand what you mean. They probably would also not consider eating it without rice so probably think you are crazy. Ask them if you can have sashimi with cucumber cut up on the side. They may understand that better.
I have not tried to order it without rice in the states or in Japan so I am not sure how they would do that.
I now have my taste going for some sashimi so I may have to go out and find some.
Good luck.

I adore sushi... but then again... like most things... I can eat just about anything I want... so the rice sits fine for me.
