How long is it taking you to eat it. If you are more than 20 minutes....there is your answer. Just because you can eat it, doesn't mean you should. Some people do get a fistula to the native stomach which allows them to eat more, but it is rare. When you progress to more solid food, you will feel full.

Scott,
You have to change your way of thinking when it comes to your new way of life. You dont want to eat until your full anymore, eat until satisfied. 15 mins is recommended, but eat no longer than 20 mins 3-5 times day. Whatever your meals are, they HAVE to be PLANNED if you want to be successful at losing weight, and keeping it off.
Best wishes pal!

You're in an adjustment period - measure out what you should eat, eat it and then wait. You may have had surgery on your stomach, but if your head is trying to see how far you can go - you aren't helping yourself.
Of course, when you get to more solid food, it will change, but you have to take advantage of this time and use your tool. I suppose that I could eat 16 ounces of mushy stuff too, but that won't help me lose weight.
This surgery is a tool, not a magic bullet. It'll work if you learn to use it right - and we all mess up now and then - but really slow yourself down. Don't eat just because you can, you know? You have to learn the new sensations - eat what you should and see how it feels. Then teach yourself that this is "satisfied" feeling. Try it anyway. If you keep having trouble, call your surgeon.
Good luck!

As was said... try and not eat until you are full. Measure out a portion size and just have that. Even use the portion size listed on the food as a guideline. And try and not go past the 15 minute timeline as was also stated. Things are different now, you just can't eat the way you used too. Time to start changing the way you think about food darlin.

Being as early out as you are, eating 16oz of beans scares me. I rarely feel full, but know that I need to limit the amount that I eat - I eat for nutrition vs. full. There are a few articles out there about eating to satisfy yourself for taste, not quantity.....its hard to get your head around eating and not feeling full or hungry. I would suggest measuring out what you eat for a while to be able to judge what you are getting in nutritionally. I also agree with Dyann, about timing...20 minutes max. to eat your meal and not liquids with it.
Hope this helps.

I can eat a small order of refried beans from taco bell and that's it! I can't even eat a small Wendy's chili..only 1/2 of it...I can't even eat a whole can of chicken and stars soup....only 1/2 of it....today I got a hot dog at the movies..no bun...and could only eat 1/2 of that! I don't understand how you could eat 16oz of anything. That is something to bring up at your next post op appointment. Did you have lapband or RNY?

You have gotten good advice from all of those who have already responded.
I rarely felt full in the early stages. As I progressed to more solid food I began to recognize that full feeling. I would recommend that you measure out your food. That is what I did for months since I didn't always feel full. At 3 weeks post-op I was eating about 1/2-1 cup, depending on what I was eating. If it was liquid such as soup I would usually eat a cup. Robin gave a good suggestion. Look at what is considered a "serving" and don't go above that. Now that I am almost a year out that is how I gauge my food. I look at what is considered a "serving". I eat my protein first and then usually only have a few bites of vegetables and starches. I pretty much limit myself to a total of 1-1 1/2 cups. Also, as was suggested, limit your time eating. Now at 3 weeks post-op I was instructed on eating over 20-30 min. which is different that what others have suggested. At 2 months post-op it was suggested that I not eat any longer than 20 min. If you are eating over a longer period of time you will be able to eat more and basicly what you are doing then is called "grazing". Also are you drinking with your meals or right after them? That will push the food threw your pouch faster which will cause you to be hungry faster. Stop drinking 15 min before you eat and don't drink for 45 min-1 hour after eating. If you overly fill your pouch over and over again you run the risk of stretching out your anastamosis which can jeopordize your weight loss. Also, drinking with meals over a period of time can also lead to stretching your anastamosis.
Now is the time to set up those good habits. To learn a new way of eating and to develop a whole new relationship with food.

I know that I could eat a whole can of spaghettios and I mentioned that to my doc at a follow up appointment and he told me to try to eat things with more substance.. I think I had stretched my pouch out because I could do a lot of chili, spaghettios, refried beans, potatoes. So long story short I ate small portions of things with more substance for a few weeks and now when I eat those other things that I use to stuff myself with I can't even eat 1/2 now. Also I had to come to realize like the other girl said we shouldn't be eating to be full we just need to be satisfied. That will be a life change for all of us because if we ate that way before we would have never needed to have surgery. Mention it to your doc I would love to hear another take on it.

Wow.. when I was 3 weeks out, I could only eat quarter of a container of refried beans from Taco Bell... I was told by my surgeon's staff to never eat more than 8oz in any one sitting.. his head nurse, who is 10 years post op, never eats more than 8oz in a meal which is one of the reasons she has maintained her weight loss.
Even after 9 months, I can only eat about 6-8oz of food, and I'm good with that
