Pouch size.
I'm just curious what everyones pouch size is? I have heard some that are 2 oz. I have a few friends here locally that had it done in St. Louis and they both have a 4 oz pouch. I have a 1 oz pouch. That is it. Though i know that they stretch eventually. My doctor said that over several years (as long as i follow my diet properly) it would only expand an ounce or 2. Maybe that explains alot of the differences in the amounts of weight that everyone loses and how quickly they lose it. It took June 3 months to lose 36 pounds. I lost 40 in the first month. It took Marcy a long time to lose her weight. They had to do 3 tummy tucks on her to remove all of her belly. WHich is one of the reasons i was so scared that i lost it so fast in the beginning. Both of the girls that i know that have had it done had 4 oz pouches, open surgery, and had their surgery done in St. Louis. They both had ALOT of problems. One has gained back almost 100 pounds and she had hers done about 6 years ago. Of course she isn't following her diet anymore. But anyway...this place has given me hope, inspiration, knowledge, and a feeling of being 'normal'. I had so many questions and concerns and so far by reading all of the posts here...my worries are gone. I know that what i am feeling and going through now is just normal really for the GBP. Thank you all....And enough rambling. How small is your pouch?

0T(Hi Duckie~)
Ok now to the pouch size....Mine small...that's all I know.I think my Dr. gave me the smallest pouch in history.I am having some medical tests run today at 11am...I have not had any food or liquid since 6pm lastnight...My tummy has not growled yet...At 22 months out I still have to remind myself to eat.I think it has to do with pouch size. With all that said....I am sure mine is the same size as everyone elses...some folks just tolerate food better than I have.

OT: hi Van! How is your pouch doing? Tolerating food better since you were dilated? (sorry for the thread crap!)

My research said
Did a lot of research on this... and pouch size two to three years post-op ranged between 8 and 12 ounces - so a cup to a cup and a half of fairly solid food. The research also was very clear that pouch size had no measurable effect on the overall percentage of body weight lost.
Gaining weight back tends to involve three things - drinking while eating (allowing you to eat more without feeling full as fast); grazing - eating more than three meals and a snack per day; and eating high-fat, high-carb, low-protein foods regularly. GBS post-ops who gain weight are often doing all three.

This all the same info that I was told and learned through research. I heard the pouch is about 1 cup after a year though, not as far as two years out. From what I can eat I believe that to be the case after one year.

size of pouch
i'm four years out. if i go out to lunch, i can eat a half a sandwich. what's interesting, though, is two or three years ago if i were to over eat i would feel like crap and be physically sick. now four years later if i were to over eat and say eat a whole sandwich instead of a half, i would feel like crap, but i would not be physically ill. i went to lunch with someone the other day. she doesn't know that i know she had wls and gained back all her weight plus more. she had to eat for lunch a double blt sandwitch and all the fries. her plate was clean. she also had two diet cokes. it amazes me that someone could go through surgery and then be able to eat that volume of food again. like i say, i would feel like crap, but at this point i don't think it would make me throw up or anything. it really is only a tool.

I have the same info as LisaM. Pouch size doesn't matter to your success...its how you use it. The opening from pouch to intestine I have heard does not matter either, but I know of people that would disagree.
I don't know the size of my pouch, but I would like to know....I think it can hold more than I put in it. I do know that my RNY was proximal and that 100cm were bypassed...some people have a distal RNY and they bypass more intestine, therefore loose more/faster.
You can always do the cottage cheese test..........if only I could stomach the cottage cheese - but I am going to try Beths recipe out tonight.

I can eat a 10oz frozen dinner no prob. It really depends on what I am eating. I can eat more of a soft food then say a steak. I am over a year out and I have noticed a large increase on the amount I can eat. I think people who can eat more than a cup to a cup and a half is because they drink and eat. That has a lot to do with the amount you can get in.
