Question sugar question

Okay, I was shopping tonight and looking for salsa and marinara sauce. All the different kinds I was looking at have sugar as an ingredient. I found a marinara sauce that didn't have sugar in it but I never did find a salsa that didn't. Are we supposed to look for things that have absolutely no sugar in them, or are things okay as long as sugar is low on the ingredient list? My hubby wouldn't let me buy anything if sugar was listed, but how is that even possible? Sugar is at least somewhere on the list in almost everything! Help!

Default Salsa is ok

I didn't have a problem with salsa. It has sugar, so go with the lowest grams of sugar. Early post-op, I tried to stay at the minimum of sugar, but found almost everything has sugar...just go for the really low grams.. I can't remember if it was 8-10g's or less.

Good luck...

Hey lady!

I just checked the information that I was given by my surgeon, the sugar content should be less than 5 grams or less per serving. Hope that helps again this is just what my surgeon told me... your might have different guidelines.

I buy Newman's Own Salsa. I just double checked the jar I had and it is only 1 gram of sugar per serving. What you do have to realize is that tomatoes have natural sugar in them, just like fruit. But most people do okay with natural sugar, it's the pure sugar and the sugar alchols that cause problems. I acutuley have more trouble with the sugar alchols verses pure sugar.

I've been having salsa on my scrambled egg since a few weeks out..and been fine. I get the Pace Picante salsa. I just had it on my meatloaf the other night, and no problemo!

Our butritionist said that sugar (or corn syrup, or any other word for sugar) should not be in the top 5 ingredients on the ingredients list-- as long as it's past that, it's probably OK.

I stick to no more than 5 grams of sugar per serving and no more than 3 grams of saturated fat - seems to work for me - have only dumped once.

Mind you - I do have one cheat treat - a mini ice cream that has 5.2 grams of sugar - once in a while as we don't get much choice of sugar free ice pops here.
