Default Ideas to boost calories with clear liquids?

I got home from the hospital two days ago (on Sunday), and until Friday I'm on clear liquids. I'm getting my daily protein in with Profect vials (25g protein each), but they're only 100 calories each, which means I'm only taking in 300 calories per day.

I'm more tired today than yesterday, and I suspect it might have something to do with taking in way too few calories. I'd like to boost my calorie intake to at least about 500-600 calories a day, but with having to avoid sugar and fats, I'm not sure how.

Anyone have any suggestions to get in some extra calories with clear liquids? My nutritionist doesn't want me drinking any more than 8 oz. of NSA juice per day.

We seem to get different instructions from each of our doctors, so you should follow their guidelines. For me I was eating cream soups with milk, lots of popsicles, propel and jello for the first 2 weeks and then added in more and more soups. Are you able to have a protein drink -ie: 8oz. of a drink?

Wishing you well.

It's weird... WLS program nutritionist says milk (and therefore milk-based protein shakes) is OK for the first week, surgeon says clear liquids only. I'm going with the surgeon's advice.

My mother (who's been and RN forever) says to forget about trying to boost calories, that I'm tired because I just had major surgery and I haven't had a real, full night's sleep in almost a week, I'm not going to "starve" on 300 calories a day until Friday, and I should just go ahead and take a nap.

As usual, mom is probably right...

I was consuming about 300 calories when I was on clear liquids. It is kind of hard to consume more then that when you are on clear liquids. Are you having any clear soups? Like chicken broth. The profect is great. Which one are you drinking? They have a few new flavors and was wondering if anybody had tried the Orange Pineapple.

I tried to have some soup broth this afternoon, but I opened the can and the smell turned my stomach... think I'll have to give that a day or two.

I'm drinking all of the Profects except the melon-flavored and mango-flavored ones. I can't say I really enjoy them, but they're drinkable... Orange pineapple isn't one of my favorites, but it's OK. I think I like the blue raspberry the best.

My husband picked up a couple of 4-packs for me from Vitamin World; the packaging is identical, but the brand is called "Any Whey" I think. Same nutrition and volume, flavors are similar, just a different name.

Be careful with milk - I became lactose intolerant after surgery, and dumping off of the milk sugars is NOT fun!!

My doctor didn't have me focus on calories, but on protien only. If I was keeping that up, and using lowfat no/low carb choices to do so, I was fine. Though they didn't focus on cals, they did tell me I would start out between 300-500 cal a day, so you sound like you are doing just great. But, I would check with your doctor, they all seem to have so many different theories on what we need to do after surgery. Best to follow doc orders! Good luck to you!!!

I think you should follow your mom's advice and not worry about calories instead focus on staying hydrated and trying to get in the recommended amount of protein. You will be able to get in your desired calories soon enough.
