6 Month Check Up
I went in for my 6 month check up (in my 7th month) on Thursday, and the NP was totally pleased with my weight loss (although I wish it would speed up a bit). She said that all of my vitamin levels were within normal to high-normal range and to continue doing what I am doing. She asked me what a normal food day looked like and I told her I stopped keeping my journal, but knew in my head that I average 90-120 grams a day,and she called me the WLS Poster Child
I am at that point where I have about 30 pounds left to lose, so I asked her how I would know whether or not I have a hernia. She checked me and on the upper right side of my incision I was really tender when she poked me and felt around, so she said I had a small one there, and then she found an umbilical hernia by by belly button. I have an appointment in January for my physical, which is required for the hernia repair, so hopefully I can shed the majority of this weight before then, and I can take my next step - the hernia repair/TT!!! She pulled all my loose skin forward and said, "Feel your hips how tight they are?" I said "yep". She said that would be me after the TT and without the flab she was holding. I am soooo excited!!!
Just wanted to update - thanks for letting me ramble

I'm glad all is goins so well Whitney. You have done such an awesome job. You are just a little ways ahead of me in surgery time, so it has been very inspirational to watch your progress along the way. I am going to go see my doc about a possible hernia too. I had a ventral one a few years back that started at my belly button and now I'm getting a lot of the same symptoms again. Upside is the TT gets covered by insurance right?

I am hoping it will. When I first started the process last year, the TT's were covered left and right, but apparently now they are harder to have covered. My NP was very good about documenting the fact that there are rashes on my pubic line from the friction (not really - but thats what I told her ), and that I also get the rashes under my breasts (I want a boob lift too), and that my back has been out twice since surgery in the readjustment process. I also told her that I have tension in my upper back from the weight of my empty tube socks they call boobs, so she documented everything - hope that helps my case!!!

Congrats Whitney...you poster child you
The TT/ hernia repair is a tricky one. Some insurance companies cover part of it. I had to pay for the skin removal part..everything else was covered.
I wish that I could have waited until my weight stabilized before I had mine done, but my hernia was too large. The results would have been better because my skin changed after another year. Even after 2 years, it is still changing in texture.
I hope the documentation helps. I am sure it will and photos, too if you have any.

What is the deal with so many hernia's? Are the side effects of the WLS? I was never told anything about these as being a risk, yet it seems like everyone has them???

When I chose to have my surgery OPEN, I signed a paper accepting the 20% risk of having one with choosing open. I think the 20% is higher now...especially after seeing all of the hernias here.
