Question Eating...

Hi Everyone! Friday night through yesterday, I was so hungry, non-stop it seemed, and I'm not sure what was up with that. Could it be PMS?

I have also noticed that meat does not make me feel full unless I eat a lot more than my normal portions. Like yesterday for lunch, I went to a Chinese buffet with some co-workers and had 3/4 - 1 cup of spicy chicken, 3 broccoli florets, 1.5 slices of tomato, 1 mushroom (no stuffing), and 3 or 4 cucumber slices, which made my plate full but not stacked. I thought, well I won't eat all of this because I will be full. Needless to say, I ate it all. I ate all the vegetables first and the meat last, and though I did not go back for seconds, I seriously think that I could have eaten more! Instead I sipped water.

Does anyone else experience not feeling full when eating meat?

I generally find meat fairly filling. You might find food more filling if you don't drink water right after you eat it.

I notice if I eat drier meats it is filling. I try not to drink after I eat to retain the fullness sensation.

It would be HEAVEN for me to eat that much! That sounds so unreal now. I could have gotten about 3 to 4 bites of the chicken down and the rest would have been wasted and the veggies would have not even been touched. I so wish I could eat even 1/2 a cup of food at one meal. Sometimes three or four tiny bites and I feel full and have to stop, but I do get hungry again later and have another bite or two sometimes.

At around the three month mark I noticed a dramatic increase in how much I could eat. With meats it is unpredicatble. Some days I could eat 3-3.5 ounces of steak and others 2 ounces is all I can take of the exact same thing. All I can say is keep an eye on the portions and don't escalate them too fast. A little scare here and there keeps us on the right track.

You may consider eating the proteins FIRST and the veggies and others second, and not to DRINK for 1/2 hour before eating, during or an hour after!! Drinking while eating pushes the food right through your pouch therefore not letting you feel full. If you don't feel full, you will eat more than you would had your pouch retained the portion it should have. Drinking and eating is a HUGE NO-NO. IT can also cause the opening at the bottom of your pouch to open/stretch up more than it should thereby allowing food to pass right through the pouch without stopping...NOT GOOD because you won't ever get that feeling of being 'full'. It's hard not to drink before, during or for an hour after meals (1/2hr. min.), but it's best that you learn to do as the further out you get, the harder it will be to keep your pouch working as the surgery intended it to. Best of luck!!

Like others have said, try to make sure you are not drinking and eating at the same time. There have been a few occasions I ate some spicy things, and needed to sip some water during my meal. I found in those times I could have eaten close to double than what I did because the water pushed things out of the pouch. Are you truelly feeling hunger? Or is there something emotional about this that you haven't completely explored? I have to say, at nearly 5 months out I have not felt a single hunger pain. Though, I will find myself(from the beginning) saying I am hungry. Then I catch myself a moment later and say, no I'm not hungry. I don't feel any pains. When I stop to examine the situation, there is usually an emotional reason, good or bad. I would eat to celebrate, to medicate, for the hell of it....... So those habits don't so easily and I found that I always have to be on guard. Just an idea. I wish you luck.

I agree with the others...don't drink when you eat. You want to feel that full feeling in the pouch as long as you can. I am one of those people who doesn't feel full or hungry..therefore I have to measure out my 1 cup of food. If I am eating out, I put the one cup (eyeball it) on my plate all at once. I don't go back for more and if I don't eat it all, oh well. I too am pretty sure that I can eat more, but as I don't get the full feeling or feel any different if I eat a cup or less, why not stop there. Takes a while to get used to.

Interesting point about meat...I can eat more beef than I can salmon...go figure!

I have found that I can eat a lot more veggies than other things. Like tomatoes and celery - I can kill a huge portion of those! Not sure why, maybe they slide through faster.

I am having a eating day today. I started my period yesterday so I know that is why. I never feel hungry usually but for 3 days a month I just want to munch. I keep good snacks around like nuts, fruit and other things that will keep my mouth moving. It sucks working next to a pick up stix though I just have to tell my self NO!............Uggg I think I want to eat again!
