Default Help on upcoming vacation!

Hey all, well I am almost 11months post op and my European vacation is around the corner. I have been living on a low fat lifestyle and enjoying it. My delima is I have a 17day vacation ahead of me mostly in Germany. I love german food, and I know it is very high in fat. I am considering on switching for my 8 days there to a low carb diet. I will have 1ltr of beer at Oktoberfest, probably take me all day, but it will be worth it. That is on my 1 year anniversary. Then I am going on a 6 day cruise. I know on the cruise ship I won't have a problem since I will have lots of healthy options. Any suggestions as far as going thru Germany? Should I just enjoy myself there and go back to my normal lowfat lifestyle once I start back on the cruise? Thanks, Mike

My personal preference would be to eat as close to my normal eating pattern as possible. For me, once I would get the taste of the "good stuff" which is bad for me, it becomes a slippery slope and cravings and bad habits would creep in. That was the end of every previous diet. Are you able to handle fats without side effects?? I would get the weinerschnitzel (sp?) heavy on the veal light on the schnitzel.

Moderation is key - I am German, and love it over there - especially the food and beer. A bite or two of things, to taste and savor, will not sabotage or ruin your success. And you will most likely be walking alot, since that's what they do over there.

Enjoy your trip (I'm jealous), the breads, the sausages, the cheese, the beer - that's all just a bonus. Make sure to take time out to savor things!

I would be careful to not stray too far from your norm. I was on vacation (granted I am not as far out of surgery as you) and there were a couple of times I ate somehting I would not normally eat and I ended up with cramping and nausea. You don't want to end up spending your trip in your hotel room sick. Good luck and have lots of fun!
