Default Weight loss

Hey everyone,

I may have a problem, I am 3 weeks out yesterday from open bypass with Pott's and for the most part I feel okay, still sore, and not as mobile as I would like to be but my biggest concern is weight loss. I was 313 when I left the hospital, and 300 when I went for my 1 week post op, and now I am at 298 and have been for about a week with no wavering, what's going on??

Thanks for all the advice,
Andrea

Default Andrea,

15 pounds in 3 weeks! And you're asking what's going on? That's great weight loss, 5 pounds a week. That's exactly how I was loosing in the beginning. Don't worry your pretty little head about this. You are successful and will continue to be. I didn't loose any weight for about one week when I was about three weeks out. Started my period and lost 5 pounds. If you are not loosing weight, trust me, you're loosing inches. I hope you were able to get your measurements before surgery, because that saved me when I didn't loose any weight for a while, I went and measured myself and found that I had lost about a foot!

You are perfectly normal! Congratulations on your surgery! Take it easy and remember, you just had major surgery. Take good care of yourself!

Default Left side pain

Andrea,
Your weight loss is right on target. You will find that you will loose weight in stops and starts. One week it will drop and the next it won't. But trust us it will come off.

The left side pain is normal. In all of us the old stomach is stitched to the inside of the abdominal wall. The stitches pull somewhat when we move around and can cause some discomfort. This can last for several months. It does get better. Remember, the incision that you see on the outside is very minor compared to the work that they did on the inside.

Good Luck,
Mary

Thank you so much I can't tell you how much worry that has taken offof my mind, if I could bother you ladies for one more thing...it is still wuite uncomfortable for me to try and lay on my side, besides the shifting of things inside I can feel, it feels like I am squishing stuff.

I hate to sound naive when it comes to these things, I did research prior but I guess everything is different when it is actually done...

as for pregnancy, that scraes me too, even though it wouldn't be for like 2 years but still, it's the worry wort in me I guess, anyways Congrats for you, and good luck with everything, I have a 3 year old son, and he is absolutely the love of my life!!

Don't tell my husband that though!!

Andrea

Smile Andrea

Andrea,

I would like to put your mind at ease about some of this stuff. Like the other ladies said your pain on the left side is "normal" but if it is unbearable and is more than a pinching type of pain then I would call Dr. Potts right away to make sure it isn't something more serious.

You are doing great in your weight loss. My first week I lost 4 lbs!! Now 7 months out I am down over 100!!! It goes off in spurts.. sometimes I don't lose for over a month then I start losing again. However I seem to lose inches while not losing pounds.. and not lose them while I am losing pounds.. so I personally look forward to the times when I am not losing pounds.

As far as pregnancy goes, don't worry your sweet head off about that either. Mary Clipper is pregnant right now a year and a half out I think. So it can happen and she will probably tell you although she loves her son tremendously that this pregnancy may be a lot easier than it was at the weight she had her son at?? I can't speak for her though.. I can only assume. I am getting married in July and we plan on starting a family not too long after that if we are blessed enough to be able to. I am really looking forward to a pregnancy where I actually LOOK pregnant instead of not showing.. and also a healthier pregnancy and easier one if that is even possible..

Good luck to you.. and don't hesitate to ask questions.. and go back through older posts.. there may be questions that were there that you didn't even know you had. You are not alone.. everyone has the same worries and concerns that you have expressed..

Smile Thanks For The Question!

Andrea,

Thanks for asking that question. Now I know what the heck is going on with me. I had no idea my stomach was attached to my abdominal wall, and that's after years of research!!!! Now I know what the pulling is, and why my left side is still sore. Thank you all for your answers!!

Also, it takes a good 6 months for the muscles to return to normal, particularly after an open procedure. Remember, no crunches or any movements that brings your knees to your nose for at least 3 months. I couldn't sleep on my side for almost a month, and I had mine lap. The more obese you were when you started, generally the faster the weight loss. It's not uncommon for some to lose 100 lbs in 4-5 months! Each person is a little different, so you will experience things differently than someone with similar conditions. However, with such a large wealth of knowledge and experiences here on this board, there's nothing new under the sun.
