Default kidney infection? stone? random pain?

So, my back started hurting the other night. Two nights, maybe 3 nights ago. Lower right quadrant, just above what's left of my butt cheek...right around the hip bone area. Last night I had a fever, and today I'm a bit nauseous and coughy. I don't exactly know where the kidney is, but I'm wondering if this could be kidney related. I'm not in a horrible amount of pain at the moment, just a nagging back ache. I don't really want to go to the doctor's unless I absolutely have to. Any suggestions?

Nagging back ache in the way you describe it associated with fever and nausea....could by pyleonephritis (kidney infection). Not something you want to fool around with. It is as simple as a urine test to figure it out. Hope you feel better.

Please don't ignore the pain. Yes it could be a kidney infection. About mid June I woke up with pain down below, like I had to pee, but nothing came out, with the lower back pain. I thought it was intensinal, and wanted to ignore it, because I have family history of those issues. Well being a Sunday, I didn't want to call the doctor, but my sister's made me call. The on call doctor knew exactly what it was from my description. He said to go to the hospital, because they would do a cat scan to make sure there was no blockage, because if you have blockage from a stone, it can lead to kidney failure and you don't want that. I was in the ER for about 4 hours on fluids, and some really good non drowsy pain med they can only give by IV, I tried for pill format and they said it is not as effective.

Please don't wait and hold out. I found out the hard way that kidney stones are common after surgery. Drink plenty of fluids and call your dr. You don't want to make it worse.

Good luck!

Seeing a friend hospitalized with a kidney infection a few years back makes me tell you....go get it checked!!! It can very easily and very fast turn into something massive. Good luck.

Keeping hydrated will always help avoid kidney stones, infections, etc. Drinking cranberry juice helps with bladder infections, because of the acids in the juice. I was also told from my urologist that lemonade is a good source of acid to help prevent stones and kidney problems. Just wanted to pass on the piece of info that I got. Good luck and don't ignore your body.

culture came back completely negative. They said heating pad and tylenol. . .whatever, that's the navy for you.

Did they do any xrays or ct scan? The culture being negative means there is no infection, which is good, doesn't mean you don't have a stone. Go to a urologist or get a second opinion.
