Default OK, I'm sick.............

My husband was on a business trip last week, and came home with a really bad cold, which he proceeded to give to ME. My throat hurts, my head is clogged, I'm a bit feverish. I'm at work now - hoping to leave early, but I've got a bunch of things I have to get done.....I know that just laying in bed helps a lot.

Any input on what I should take? Pre-op, I would taken my world-famous Nyquil/Dayquil cocktail , but there's aspirin in that. I've got some sugar free cough drops, and I took some cough syrup.

What have you guys taken post-op that has helped a lot?

Thanks - Sincerely, Clogged in Carlsbad.

I take robitussin CF . It has decongestant, cough suppressant and a little something that soothes the throat. I use nasal spray. All this every 4-6 hours as time released products won't be absorbed by us. Benadryl at night is added. Matter of fact...I am taking all that now as I too along with both kids have colds. I make a horrible patient.

I don't have any helpful suggestions other than rest and chicken broth, but I do have a question. We can't have aspirin? I knew we couldn't have ibuprofen but this is news to me. Hmmmm. What pain medication are we allowed to have?

Default Dimetapp

Ok, this isn't as good as the doctor's suggestion But I take Dimetapp, it's made for kids, there is no alchool or sugar and it's grape flavored. Right now (I'm only 6 weeks out) it's the only thing my pouch will tolerate when I have a stuffy nose.

Ron:
I had some complications during my surgery, so I especially can't have aspirin. But, I think it's on the "no-no" list anyway.

Ron, we need to stay away from aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil and several others. The only over the counter pain med we can take is acetaminophen (Tylenol). Those other pain meds can cause ulcers which is something you don't want to happen! Those meds are all medications that are known as NSAIDs. (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs) Here is a list of NSAIDs drugs that you may find helpful.

Aspirin (Anacin, Ascriptin, Bayer, Bufferin, Ecotrin, Excedrin)
Choline and magnesium salicylates (CMT, Tricosal, Trilisate)
Choline salicylate (Arthropan)
Celecoxib (Celebrex)
Diclofenac potassium (Cataflam)
Diclofenac sodium (Voltaren, Voltaren XR)
Diclofenac sodium with misoprostol (Arthrotec)
Diflunisal (Dolobid)
Etodolac (Lodine, Lodine XL)
Fenoprofen calcium (Nalfon)
Flurbiprofen (Ansaid)
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Motrin IB, Nuprin)
Indomethacin (Indocin, Indocin SR)
Ketoprofen (Actron, Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail)
Magnesium salicylate (Arthritab, Bayer Select, Doan's Pills, Magan, Mobidin, Mobogesic)
Meclofenamate sodium (Meclomen)
Mefenamic acid (Ponstel)
Meloxicam (Mobic)
Nabumetone (Relafen)
Naproxen (Naprosyn, Naprelan*)
Naproxen sodium (Aleve, Anaprox)
Oxaprozin (Daypro)
Piroxicam (Feldene)
Rofecoxib (Vioxx)
Salsalate (Amigesic, Anaflex 750, Disalcid, Marthritic, Mono-Gesic, Salflex, Salsitab)
Sodium salicylate (various generics)
Sulindac (Clinoril)
Tolmetin sodium (Tolectin)
Valdecoxib (Bextra)

Note: Some products, such as Excedrin, are combination drugs (Excedrin is acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine).

Note that acetaminophen (Paracetamol; Tylenol) is not on this list. Acetaminophen belongs to a class of drugs called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers). The exact mechanism of action of acetaminophen is not known. Acetaminophen relieves pain by elevating the pain threshold, that is, by requiring a greater amount of pain to develop before it is felt by a person. It reduces fever through its action on the heat-regulating center of the brain. Specifically, it tells the center to lower the body's temperature when the temperature is elevated. Acetaminophen relieves pain in mild arthritis but has no effect on the underlying inflammation, redness and swelling of the joint.
Paracetamol, unlike other common analgesics such as aspirin and ibuprofen, has no anti-inflammatory properties, and so it is not a member of the class of drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs.
