Question Question for Post-op Women

Are there any post-op women in here that have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)? I'm wondering about your success with the insulin resistance, hirsutism, if your weight loss was slower, if your periods became regular...basically if your endocrine levels straightened out and your PCOS symptoms diminished. I've read that women with PCOS who have WLS are practically cured. Not sure I believe that so I wanted some true stories from real people.

Thanks so much!

I had PCOS. I stopped my glucophage 24 hours prior to surgery. I just hit my 9 month mark last week and I'm 1 pound to goal. Looks like it worked for me. I've had a regular period from about my 2nd month out until today. I've not had the need for any medication for this.

Default Just what I needed to know!

Thanks for letting me know your story Jenny. Did you have any other comorbidities with your PCOS (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, etc.)? Obviously the insulin resistance has been resolved--that's wonderful to hear.

Congratulations on making goal and getting a handle on your PCOS!

Oh, and last night I found this study of WLS on women with PCOS: http://cms.clevelandclinic.org/baria.../pubs/PCOS.pdf

Really very dry reading, but extremely informative. One more piece of info I need to help convince my husband this is the best thing for me!

I was pre-diabetic, clinically depressed, had a super fast heart rate, but not high blood pressure. I don't think I had alot of other co-morbidities...yet, but they would have appeared. Thanks for the congrats...one pound to go.

I still have irregular periods. I stopped taking glucophage before surgery, I still take birth control. I had a ton of laser hair removal so I am not sure if the slowing down of facial hair is due to that or the lost weight, it has decreased but it is not totally gone.

I am 3 1/2 months post - op, i definitely noticed a change in growth of facial hair, i find that im tweezin less often, which is great. Im not sure how my levels are, im going to the gyn at the end of this month...also the darkened skin marks by my arms ( sympton of PCOS) have definitely pretty much disappeared. Good luck i think you will see changes within a couple of months. Norma

I too have PCOS and issues with my levels and a little facial hair, nothing terrible, but the thought that this CAN eventually all go away is outstanding!! I am really excited to know I wont have to take Glucophage any longer.. YAY gastric bypass!!

Default Wonderful!

Thanks Norma and Julee. I have pretty much the whole spectrum of PCOS...insulin resistance, hirsutism, acanthosis nigricans (the dark areas), skin tags, messed up cycles and on and on. I can't weight (sorry for the pun) to get further in my process. I've just about convinced my husband that wls isn't a fad and that this is the best thing I could do for myself in order to live a longer, healthier life. Thanks for giving me even more hope that some, if not all of the PCOS symptoms will diminish with the weight loss.
