Default Drinking the Water Rules

I had my surgery about 10 days ago and am working hard to get my water quota in. I think that if I could drink with a straw, I would have absolutely no problem meeting my daily goal. I also find myself drinking big 'sips'. I just can't help it. I don't feel pain when I drink large sips and I am more able to meet my goal. I just dont want to damage anything. Please give me some advice as there was not alot of pre-op counseling available here on what to expect and what to do after the surgery. Thanks.

Although my MD never said it was wrong, some here have been advised to not drink out of a straw as you gulp more air. I don't find that happens with me and the second I switched to drinking from a straw, my water woes were gone. I was struggling to get in more than 25-40 ounces a day in the beginning. I discovered I dislike drinking out of a water bottle and could sip from a straw mindlessly much better. I now have a 35 ounce cup with straw that I fill two times a day with iced decaf in addition to water and I am good to go. The amount you take in with each sip should be guided by how you feel. If it hurts, don't do it. If it doesn't hurt, than you can accomodate that amount and water emptys from the pouch quickly.

Dyann is right - I was oneying my doc with all the rules, and about a month ago I started with the straw. I also don't tend to gulp air, and actually gulp more with those water bottles with the sports cap...go with what feels right to your lil pouch

Me too, I have a harder time drinking from a glass. I always use a straw or water bottle. I get in all my fluids plus some with this method. Try different temp of liquids too...some of us drink hot, warm or ice cold...to each his/her own.
