alcohol
I am new to this board but am already learning bunches!! I am 5 weeks post op Lap RNY and am doing well. I am wondering when most of you tried drinking alcohol of some type? I am not a big drinker, but do enjoy a glass of red wine or a rum with diet coke every once in a while. I do not plan on trying it any time in the near future, but eventually I would like to partake again!!
Also, do you dump when you drink?? I would love to know what others experiences are.
Thanks!!!

The higher the alcohol content, the less likely you are to dump. The effects of alcohol hits within minutes, so you really would have to be moderate abou it, especially the first few drinks you may try. One glass of wine will put your blood alcohol level at .2 for about 1/2 hour befoe the liver kicks in.

oh yeah
Well, i first tried alcohol almost 3 months out, it was a week before, the doc recommended 3 months, and i amost made it.
however, a few weeks later i drank some wine, i like sweet white, well after my second BIG glass, i dumped. I started sweating like crazy, felt nauseous, wanted to strip my clothes off in the bar and then I FINALLY realized what was going on and told my girlfriend we had to go NOW.
I felt better in a 1/2 hour, but that was my one and only dumping sydrome so far, so, now i have one glass of wine and then switch to beer.
i also did a shot once and OH MY LORD...I was DRUNK in 30 seconds flat, it was actually very amusing, I have never gotten drunk that quickly.
So...be careful. Unfortunately, I am building my tolerance up again...problem with being single and getting skinnier...I want to go out more often. Good luck!

I have tried a glass of wine 2 times....hit me pretty quick, but I was never a big drinker before surgery. Diet coke does not sit well with me - I haven't had a great amount of carbonation, but find some liquids and foods just don't sit well. Not that I am sick or dump, but not the best choice for me. I found low carb Smirnoff Ice with very little sugar and had that a few times while camping.

I haven't tried alcohol yet. Not sure if I will as I really don't miss it, and don't want the extra and empty calories...

I had rum and diet coke about 3 months out. Last week when I went to Cancun with my mom I had about 8-10 Rum and diets because it was open bar and I was so freaking drunk. It was fun. Just be extremely careful.
Oh! And make sure you take some kind of ibuprofen if you get too drunk, the next day you may feel really sick to your stomach and feel like that you have throw up a lot, but nothing comes up. I noticed they helped for that. I've only heavily drank 3 times since surgery 1 year ago though. I don't really like the not knowing what I'm doing feeling since it hits so hard now.

Last night I got so drunk on cranberry juice & vodka. 4-4oz glasses. I believe they're called Cape Cods or something like that but I drank water between the drinks. Didn't wake up with a hang over. I wouldn't make it a habit though.

I drink verrrrrrrrrrry little, usually just one beer at a time. As for mixed
drinks, I do love coconut rum with pineapple juice, but I use alot of ice and let it water down a tad. We do get tipsy alot faster, so do be careful. Always try to be with someone you trust 100% if you plan on imbibing. Also, you can mix wine with some diet Sprite or something like that for a wine spritzer, and make sure you eat something when drinking.

Ah, no NSAIDs and alcohol, the two together can lead to an ulcer.

Hangover's are generally caued because you're dehydrated....drinkin wate between drinks reduces a hangover, and hopefully helps you pace yourself.
There's a HUGE chance of switching addictions from food to alcohol.
