Default Yet another question from the newbie...

I'm pretty comfortable with the food plan and how it's been progressing...

but one thing no one has mentioned to me is, WHEN can I have coffee and wine again?

I understand I probably will have to have pretty small amounts of them. But when is it safe to have them again?

Smile Coffee & Wine

Skinnymonkey,

As far as coffee goes, every Dr. has his/her own specifications.. Our Doctors here say they won't take that away from us, as they wouldn't want it taken away from them. Therefore many new post-ops are drinking coffee. I personally enjoy tea, as I am not much of a coffee drinker. As for Wine, that is your own personal preference. Just remember that alcohol does relax your pouch and it has A LOT of empty calories that you may not want to consume. Also remember that it does not take much wine or any other alcoholic beverage to get you completely wasted so be careful and don't drink and drive.

I Agree totally with Christina. Be careful with the alcohol! I drank half a glass of wine 6 months post-op and was completely trashed! This is from a guy who could down a bottle and barely be tipsy.

Smile The cheapest date

Any liquor will have you tipsy quickly, but you sober up quicker too. Try it at home, so you dont have a funny reaction in public. regarding the time line? I had my first drink at about 7 weeks out. Good luck!

I had a smirnof ice at 10 weeks out and I was trashed after 1/2 the bottle. However 20 minutes later I was fine.

Default At your discretion

I couldn't drink regular coffee until about 4 months post-op because it made me too jittery. I can have small amounts of alcohol, but it's not really my thing anyway, so I don't miss it. I will have about 1/2 a glass of wine occassionally, but that's about it.

I think it all boils down to what you can tolerate - just start off slow (sip someone else's coffee or drink before you buy your own), and give your pouch about 5 minutes after the first sip to see if you can handle it.

Good luck!

Everything in moderation is my motto. As Barbara said, try a small amount. Wait a few minutes and see what it does. I was drinking coffee at one week and had a bit o' wine around 4-5 weeks I think. As forementioned, you get plastered quickly on very little and you sober up almost as quickly. A word of caution if you have a tendancy towards addictions. Many people trade their eating addiction with alcohol.

that is absolutely correct. people do trade one addiciton for another. it happened to a friend of mine who had surgery before me. in the process since alcohol is empty calories my friend also gained 17 pounds back in 1 year. someone else i know gained back 20 pounds in 1 year from the alcohol.

Default Yes, you trade addictions

I traded my food addiction to a shopping addiction. I just look most of the time, but it keeps me busy and I walk a lot through the stores and malls. I never drank and can't stand the taste of alcohol, so I guess that is a good thing. Living with an alcoholic (my ex-husband) was enough for me! Icky.
I do drink coffee and Kelly (nurse practitioner for Dr. Callery/Potts) says go for it. I use sugarfree vanilla syrup with non-fat milk and it is great. I waited until 2-1/2 months out though to start drinking coffee and I only started with sips.
