Default Hungry

Damn, I am so hungry. This is serious. I am exactly one week post op and am questioning whether or not the surgeon actually did the correct surgery. I know he was in there taking out my gall bladder, but did he do the roux? He says he did (yes, I asked). I want to eat everything, it is making me miserable. When I do eat, I never get full, or even close to it. I have to stop myself, because my stomach is supposed to be tiny now. I have already advanced myself from broth to cream soups because I cannot stand it anymore, even the cream soups do not do it. This is affecting my days and nights, I cannot sleep because I am so hungry.
What happened to all the "I dont even think about food now" and "just a bite and I fell like exploding"? I am shaking in this chair right now thinking about a big pizza or steak right now, and I just ate...twice.
Anyway, thanks for listening to my rant...
Tony

Hi. You sound just like me one week out. ( I am 5 weeks post now) and yes, I have felt that way too even now. I wondered if he did the surgery the right way. I've listened and observed to others who have gone through the surgery (my sister did 3 years ago and is still doing beautifully) I have lost 28 lbs so far (so I know the surgery worked) . When you said you ate 2x and you're still hungry I am wondering what you had, how much and how soon in between meals and are you getting your protein shakes in???? I actually tried something not quite "soft stage" today and thought I was going to faint from the pain (never happend before...another good sign the surgery was done ha ha) The biggest thing my doctor suggested was to make sure I am getting my protein shakes in , the water, fat free milk etc. in between my meals and to eat the meals first. wait 45 min before I start my shakes.. good luck and be careful of what you "take in before you're supposed to " I wouldn't wish the pain I had most of this afternoon on anybody. How many times a day do you eat? At your stage I was told to eat like 6 times a day. Are you getting all of your water in? Sometimes when you feel hungry you are really in need of water not food. In between "meals" I filled up on my water. The liquid stage is hard. Some of your hunger is probably head hunger but I'm sure I felt real hunger in those first few weeks. Either way, from my own experince as soon as I got off of the liquids and started more solid foods I started feeling full and started losing my appetite after very little food. Just hang in there! Follow your doctor's eating plan and even though you feel hungry don't progress too early into the solid stuff. I know its hard but its the best thing. Your pouch needs to heal enough to tolerate more than the liquids.

I had a similar experience to Beth, regular food will sit with you much longer and fill you up much quicker. IT will get better!!

Protein shakes are a life saver when you're hungry-and, if you're like I was-it is definitly hunger. Try these....I buy Walmart's Body Fortress Whey Protein. about 1 cup Crystal light-any flavor-some frozen strawberries-1 scoop protein powder-and some ice. Mix in blender until the consitancy of a milk shake-YUM YUM YUM. I have had one of these for breakfast almost every day since I was allowed these-and they do fill you up. I think you could probably even have another for a snack.

It does get better. You are in the healing stage right now and you body has been through a trauma. Its a tough few weeks, but it won't be long and you will feel better. At almost 5 months, I don't ever feel full - thats why I have to measure out my food.

I agree with others, it may be a dehydration thing - drink more water and if you can get in protein drinks - they stick with you longer.

Soon your body will adapt and it should be clear sailing.

Best to you.

Hang in there - I remember that stage in my recovery well . . . while on full liquids, I just knew that the surgery didn't work . . . I think that I had a lot of "head hunger" too . .. but as soon as I was eating things that stayed in my pouchie . . . man, I saw the difference - one being, one bite too full and I had this overwhelming full feeling that was miserable . . . Every day gets better and better for me . . . I'm hoping the same thing goes for you.

I was the same way the first couple of weeks and was complaining to my surgeron about it. He told me to start taking Prilosec. It made all the difference. What I thought was hunger, wasn't. For me personally, it made the hunger feelings go away. Now, I hardly ever feel hungry.

Just a thought.
