Exclamation My first stomach "NO NO"

I went shopping today and found an exciting package of albacore tuna "steak" already cooked with 34 grams of protein. I was so excited I bought it for lunch took it home . I chewed and chewed and chewed and got through about 1/4 of it and that seemed to be just fine. Then, I stood up and thought I was dying. OUCH isn't the word for it. I thought I would vomit (but I didn't ) I had to lay down for about 20 min. The pain was really awful and it felt like all of the tuna was stuck in my chest. I think I hate albacore now. Has anyone else had this happen? I thought the food was "soft" enough as I am 5 weeks out from surgery now. This was the first time I've experienced anything like this before and certainly won't do that again. Now I see why you all suggest to try "new food " at home in small amounts first! Denise F.

Denise,

I think I know the packaged tuna you're talking about and it's very tasty !! Of course I am 'pre wls' for now, so unfortunately I can eat anything that isn't tied down....but it would be a shame if you couldn't eat tuna anymore - I always did think those little packages of seasoned/cooked tuna were perfect!!

Hopefully the 'ugh' feeling passes and you can try the tuna again at a later time.

Delilah:
I wasn't cleared to eat tuna until I was further out. I specifically asked the nurse because I like it, and know it has a lot of protein. But, she said to hold off on it for a while - I think it may be too dry.

Sorry that happened! Freeze what you have, and you should be able to eat it later on. I've got a lot of stuff that made me ill (for no real reason), and I was able to eat it later on. I'm contemplating getting a Foodsaver to save this stuff, but those darn things are so expensive!

This used to happen to me A LOT in the beginning with chicken. IT HURTS LIKE HELL!! You just have to remind yourself to eat slower and chew more. I know you probably think you did do that, but when I slowed it down even more and chewed even more it stopped happening...it took awhile for me to learn this lesson though!!

Hi and Thanks for the info. I will try freezing the packs until maybe later. I think you're right it is "too dry" (and I'm feeling much better now although my stomach doesn't seem to want anything but water now) Denise :- )

Denise I personally think you just tried it to soon. Anything that you had to chew hat well inorder to get down should have been a No No. I am kind of confused what is albacore tuna steak? Hope you are feeling better.

Hi Denise. If you've seen the star-kist tuna in water pouches they have out now it is similar to that only it isn't "flaked" like tuna it is like having a piece of fish or salmon for dinner. (not like having a roast beef or a steak it is fish) I think it was really too dry to eat and I should've mashed it down but, I will wait till a much later time to try that again. I thought that if I could eat the tuna in water out of a can then this might be worth a try for all of the protein that it has...but, a little too soon. Thanks for the feedback!

I have tried the tuna in lemon pepper ( the flakey stuff) that are in the packets, and I found that it was a little too dry as well, so I mixed a litle bit of cottage cheese with it, and ate really slowly and it held fine. I know it sounds kind of gross, but it was actually quite tasty !

It is a good idea to have lots of little freezable containers and plenty of room in your freezer for left overs for things that you just can not tollerate at this point, so you can try them out later.
Sorry tuna hit you badly this time hopefully you can tollerate it later because it is a great source of protein.

My first stuck item was tuna sashimi which has a higher water content than the cooked stuff. I have found, like mentioned above, mix the protein with either cooked beans or soft veggies, ricotta etc... and it makes it all go down much smoother.

I'm almost 5 months out and am still struggling with fish of any kind unless its shellfish, even the moist canned tuna. It does the same thing for me, it makes my pouch hurt! Salmon made me deathly ill! I used to love salmon but after throwing up for 2 hours that was the end of that!

Give it a month or so and try again. If it still doesn't go you may have to wait even longer.
