Unhappy Uhh, denied but still trying.. slim fast?

So I've been trying to find a way to lose some weight before retrying this surgery attempt. I sent my letter in to the insurance, but I'm not going to just sit here and be depressed about it falling through. So slim fast..

I have a very busy life. I have school, band, and softball everyday.
I get up around 5:55, and I don't eat breakfast- no appetite.

I eat a light lunch at about 12:15- I have C lunch.
I come home, do my AP Homework, Then eat dinner at like, 6:15.

My problem is that I don't sleep. At all. Like, an hour every night. So I snack on EVERYTHING from 9:00 to 3:00am. :\. So I know I should eat more throughout the day.. but I have no time? At all!

I've almost dehydrated multiple times because of this... I don't drink enough of anything throughout my day.

So any tips? I'm thinking..

A slimfast when I wake up- 5:55am
Half a banana in the passing time to 3rd period.- 9:05am

A slimfast for lunch. 12:15pm

A snack of carrots, or celery, something crunchy when I get home. 3:00pm.

My balanced dinner of lean beef or chicken, steamed frozen veggies and brown rice or pasta- 6:15pm

And then a small piece of fruit at 8:00pm

64oz of water.. Luckily my teacher's allow me to drink in class! [:

And.. my omega three vitamins for high blood pressure..
And my teen girls one a day stuff for- everything else. xD.

Does this sound good? Of course I'll exercise ;D. And uhh.

Idk, ;\. I've tried everything. I've done this before but I GAINED weight. My doctor said I wasn't eating enough for my size.. because I was like almost 400 pounds..

I'm so tired of this.. Nothing works. ._.

Are you not sleeping because you're just not, or are stressed? Most overweight folks suffer from sleep apnea. I did and it affected me profoundly. One year before my surgery, I was diagnosed as early onset Alzheimer's and had absolutely no short term memory. My wife was reduced to leaving me sticky notes all around to remind me to do simple things. I gained massive amounts of weight, nearly lost my mind, and caused damage that I can't recover. It's a vicious cycle, you can go round and round with doctors and specialists and they can say this causes that, and that causes this, but the underlying root of all the issues is sleep depravation. Has anyone suggested you do a sleep study?

I think it's great that you're coming up with a plan. I really do hope you can get something worked out in the future so you can have surgery, but I also hope you can have some success with weight loss with the right diet.

I have a couple thoughts on your plan.

If you're gonna use Slim Fast, get the low carb one. A low carb, high protein will help you. Regular Slim Fast is high in carbs and sugar and won't help you lose weight. Plus it's not even high in protein. I think it just has ten grams. But the low carb one has more protein. I think 20 grams. So get that.

But consider whether you want to use a protein drink at all. The thing is, drinking a lot of liquid between meals can help you feel full, but a glass of Slim Fast is not going to be as filling as, say, a piece of chicken. You will probably feel full longer if you eat the chicken, too. So compare the calories, fat, protein, and carbs in a serving of Slim Fast to a serving a chicken and see which will give you the most bang for your buck, so to speak.

If you want to use a protein drink like Slim Fast (or something else), you can put it in the blender with some ice to make it more like a milkshake. Adding ice does not add any calories, but it makes it bigger and thicker which might make it more filling. I realize you can't do that at lunch time at school. But you could do it for breakfast.

Have you talked to your doctor about the fact that you can't sleep? We really do need sleep for good health.

at 16 years old you need at LEAST 8 hours of sleep....talk to your dr about that first.....BTW your age is probably the main reason you were denied.

I think she posted previously that her insurance just won't cover WLS. Some will not cover it if you're under 18, but some will.

Good decision, hon. Your plan may work for you this time around. Personally, I think it is a brilliant plan. Try to keep to it and keep us updated.

WLS surgery is like the Atkins diet with severe consequences. So just set your mind to the fact that you're doing it just as if you've had the surgery. It's a mind thing. And if you get your mind set, maybe- hopefully- you won't need the surgery.

Thanks everyone! I wasn't denied because of age, just because they didn't find it medically nessecary and it's not covered in my plan if it isn't. I don't sleep because of all my homework :P. It's not really an issue on the weekends.. just during the week. There's so much I have to do! I know I need sleep, but I can't deny my grades for it, haha. I think I may choose a different protein but with the chicken thing.. I mainly chose something liquidy like slim fast because it's faster. I don't have time for anything! Haha. That really is a big reason I overeat and gain so much weight.. I barely eat during the week, and then when I have time to, I OVERRR do it. [:.

I personally like protein shakes because they're quick and easy. If you feel satisfied with the Slim Fast, then it's fine. But if you find it doesn't fill you up or keep you feeling full very long, try some dense solid protein.

Do protein shakes have any side affects? I know that I was lactose the last time I used slim fast and I couldn't hold it down. That was when I was like 10 though, haha. So plain protein.. any tips on it? I get really grossed out when drinking really really thick things.. ]:.
